NWS forecast changes - April 24
« on: April 19, 2017, 09:25:06 AM »
I thought I'd start a new thread with the current anticipated changeover date in the subject, especially since it is less than a week away.

I have not seen any issues lately with the new forecast API / data, which was not the case with the previous deadlines. So maybe the third (is it the third?) time is the charm.

Yep.. third time may be the charm :)

Subject: Updated: Implementation of changes to the NWS forecast website
at forecast.weather.gov on or about April 24, 2017

Updated to change implementation date to on or about
Monday, April 24, 2017

On or about Monday, April 24 2017, the National Centers for
Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Central Operations (NCO) will implement a
major change to its Point Forecast application at:

http://forecast.weather.gov

The Public Information Statement (PNS) issued on October 17,
2016, to collect comments on this intended change is online at:

http://www.nws.noaa.gov/os/notification/pns16-35forecastgov.htm

Comments on these changes were generally favorable so implementation of
the new Point Forecast application on or about April 24, 2017, is now
planned. The purpose of these changes is to create a more usable
interface with no duplication of service to users while providing a more modern service-oriented data structure.

The October 17 PNS provided details on changes that will be made to a
variety of Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) in association with this
implementation. Partners and users are encouraged to refer to this PNS
for the specific technical details.

The following link provides partners and users with a series of
examples of how the user experience of the Point Forecast application
will change on or about April 24 for certain key functions. Both before and after depictions are provided in each case.

https://forecast-v3.weather.gov/documentation?redirect=legacy

Partners and users who have bookmarked forecast.weather.gov to access the
Point Forecast pages will be taken to a page indicating the new URL they
should bookmark to access the new page in the future.

In addition to the above changes, all URLs will be served only on SSL per
Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Directive M-15-13 online at:

https://obamawhitehouse.archives.gov/sites/default/files/omb/memoranda/2015/m-15-13.pdf

All URLs for forecast.weather.gov and www.weather.gov will be
redirected to SSL and will be accessible only at https: domain names.

If you have any questions or comments, please contact:

Kolly Mars
NCEP Central Operations

I'll be ready with the final advforecast2.php script release then ...

Ok, I've pushed the release version of advforecast2.php V5.00 (JSON) to the Saratoga template update tool.

Saratoga template: update tool with a query for Base-USA, *-plugin, 22-Apr-2017

Standalone:  script page
Note: you'll also need the V1.01 of DualImage.php and a few new icons -- there's a update .zip for that on the script page.

I didn't generate new images for the animated .gifs -- they are cold10..cold100 and ncold10..ncold100 .. You already have a cold.gif and ncold.gif (I think) .. they'll be used instead of the PoP stamped ones which aren't available with the montetriviglio Icon set.  Also, no DualImage support for .gif (as with the prior versions).

Noting that currently the alerts links / service does not seem to be working for me (even on the NWS beta site).

Using https://alerts.weather.gov/products/ I get Not Found.

Using https://alerts-v2.weather.gov/products/ I get "An error occurred while processing your request."

Using https://preview-alerts.weather.gov/products (URL from older code) I get Unable to Connect.

They are likely moving stuff around for tomorrow's planned cutover.  I'm using api.weather.gov in the released code and alerts-v2.weather.gov for the details (which worked yesterday).

Expect some instability as they move to completion.. it won't be until they actually implement that the final links to the detail view of the alerts is decided.

Methinks the NWS has rolled back the change due to issues, so the old forecast.weather.gov is working again.

While it is, you may want to check your Settings.php for $SITE['NWSforecasts']   = array( ... ); or if standalone, the $NWSforecasts = array( ... ); entries.

If they look like
Code: [Select]
  "VTZ007|Coles Pond Area|http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?site=btv&FcstType=text&site=BTV&map.x=290&map.y=88&TextType=2",
  "VTZ004|Island Pond VT|http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=44.817889670988784&lon=-71.87667846679688&site=btv&unit=0&lg=en&FcstType=text&TextType=2",
  "NHZ001|Pittsburg NH|http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=45.05606124274415&lon=-71.38778686523438&site=gyx&unit=0&lg=en&FcstType=text&TextType=2",
  "VTZ007|St Johnsbury VT|http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?map.x=307&map.y=100&site=BTV&FcstType=text&zmx=1&zmy=1&TextType=2",
  "VTZ017|Burlington VT|http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?map.x=208&map.y=93&site=BTV&FcstType=text&zmx=1&zmy=1&TextType=2",
  "VTZ008|Montpelier VT|http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?map.x=261&map.y=118&site=BTV&FcstType=text&zmx=1&zmy=1&TextType=2",
  "VTZ003|Newport VT|http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?map.x=289&map.y=43&site=BTV&FcstType=text&zmx=1&zmy=1&TextType=2",
you should (while you can) convert them to MapClick.php URLS that have lat= and long= in them like
Code: [Select]
  "VTZ007|Coles Pond Area|http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=44.5421&lon=-72.215&unit=0&lg=english&FcstType=text&TextType=2",
  "VTZ004|Island Pond VT|http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=44.81788&lon=-71.87667&unit=0&lg=english&FcstType=text&TextType=2",
  "NHZ001|Pittsburg NH|http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=45.05606&lon=-71.38778&unit=0&lg=english&FcstType=text&TextType=2",
  "VTZ007|St Johnsbury VT|http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=44.4156&lon=-71.975&unit=0&lg=english&FcstType=text&TextType=2",
  "VTZ017|Burlington VT|http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=44.4881&lon=-73.2262&unit=0&lg=english&FcstType=text&TextType=2",
  "VTZ008|Montpelier VT|http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=44.2665&lon=-72.5719&unit=0&lg=english&FcstType=text&TextType=2",
  "VTZ003|Newport VT|http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=44.937&lon=-72.2089&unit=0&lg=english&FcstType=text&TextType=2",

The easy way to do this (while the current forecast.weather.gov is up) is to:
1) copy the URL into the browser and remove the &TextType=2 from the end of the URL and press enter.
2) near the bottom of the page, right click on the "Printable Forecast" link and copy THAT URL to replace your URL in the list.  It will have lat=...&lon=... in it.
3) repeat for your entire list. then save the update to Settings.php (or the advforecast2.php script if standalone).

Then you'll be fully ready for the conversion of the forecast.weather.gov site when it finishes.

Also, there is a small setting in advforecast2.php (JSON) V5.00 that controls what URLs are used for the clickable Alert and detail links.  It is currently set as
Code: [Select]
$useProdNWS = true; // =false, use preview V3 sites, =true, use production sites (after 24-Apr-2017)
which causes the detail alerts from alerts.weather.gov and detail page links to forecast.weather.gov.
You might want to change it to
Code: [Select]
$useProdNWS = false; // =false, use preview V3 sites, =true, use production sites (after 24-Apr-2017)
to have the (working) alert details from alerts-v2.weather.gov and the (working) forecast-v3.weather.gov sites until the real conversion is finished.

Fortunately, the api.weather.gov site (used for all the JSON retrieval) has been stable during their fiddling with forecast.weather.gov.

Best regards,
Ken

//Version 1.01 - 28-Jul-2012 - added support for nws-alerts scripts

Which has this line for what you said to check the url for the forecast..

$SITE['fcsturlNWS']      = 'http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=47.4992&lon=-121.7766&site=sew&smap=1&marine=0&unit=0&lg=en&TextType=2';

After some flakiness during the day, I seem to have everything working again in the ($useProdNWS === false) mode. So I'm sticking with that for now.

Has there been any official word on what the plans are?

For now, you can leave it as 'false' .. It would save one HTTPS request to the api.weather.gov site when the forecast refreshes.  I put it there for a future enhancement (hourly forecast graphs) just because it was available data.. it's not currently used by the script at all.

Sometime in the future, I'll have a add-on script to produce the hourly forecast meteogram from that JSON data (it's not a simple task due to the time-compressed data in the JSON file).

I've not seen any announcements on the NOAA mailing lists.  Oddly, the forecast-v3.weather.gov site says
Quote
NWS has implemented the next version of the forecast pages. Highlights include a standardized look and feel, a mobile-ready landing page, and a completely new architecture with a modernized API.
(emphasis mine).  So they may try again soon.. the prior announcement spoke of "on or about April 24" so they may just be regrouping to try again any old time.  Good idea to keep the $useProdNWS = false; for now.

you should (while you can) convert them to MapClick.php URLS that have lat= and long= in them like
Code: [Select]
  "VTZ007|Coles Pond Area|http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=44.5421&lon=-72.215&unit=0&lg=english&FcstType=text&TextType=2",
  "VTZ004|Island Pond VT|http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=44.81788&lon=-71.87667&unit=0&lg=english&FcstType=text&TextType=2",
  "NHZ001|Pittsburg NH|http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=45.05606&lon=-71.38778&unit=0&lg=english&FcstType=text&TextType=2",
  "VTZ007|St Johnsbury VT|http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=44.4156&lon=-71.975&unit=0&lg=english&FcstType=text&TextType=2",
  "VTZ017|Burlington VT|http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=44.4881&lon=-73.2262&unit=0&lg=english&FcstType=text&TextType=2",
  "VTZ008|Montpelier VT|http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=44.2665&lon=-72.5719&unit=0&lg=english&FcstType=text&TextType=2",
  "VTZ003|Newport VT|http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=44.937&lon=-72.2089&unit=0&lg=english&FcstType=text&TextType=2",

The easy way to do this (while the current forecast.weather.gov is up) is to:
1) copy the URL into the browser and remove the &TextType=2 from the end of the URL and press enter.
2) near the bottom of the page, right click on the "Printable Forecast" link and copy THAT URL to replace your URL in the list.  It will have lat=...&lon=... in it.
3) repeat for your entire list. then save the update to Settings.php (or the advforecast2.php script if standalone).

Then you'll be fully ready for the conversion of the forecast.weather.gov site when it finishes.

Also, there is a small setting in advforecast2.php (JSON) V5.00 that controls what URLs are used for the clickable Alert and detail links.  It is currently set as
Code: [Select]
$useProdNWS = true; // =false, use preview V3 sites, =true, use production sites (after 24-Apr-2017)
which causes the detail alerts from alerts.weather.gov and detail page links to forecast.weather.gov.
You might want to change it to
Code: [Select]
$useProdNWS = false; // =false, use preview V3 sites, =true, use production sites (after 24-Apr-2017)
to have the (working) alert details from alerts-v2.weather.gov and the (working) forecast-v3.weather.gov sites until the real conversion is finished.

Fortunately, the api.weather.gov site (used for all the JSON retrieval) has been stable during their fiddling with forecast.weather.gov.

Best regards,
Ken
Ok, I've pushed a 5.01 update with $useProdNWS = false; as the default.  I'll continue to watch/refine the script while waiting for the 19-Jun-2017 planned cutover.  Meanwhile, please CHECK your point-forecast URLs per above and correct any missing the lat= and lon= variables .. they must have those for the future implementation of the forecast.weather.gov site V3 in June..  you've been cautioned :)

If this is all you changed I'll keep the version I have.  $useProdNWS = false
