More news about the eruption.

The cloud of ash from the volcano eruption on Iceland has caused interference in Swedish aerospace after the Civil Aviation Authority (Luftfartsverket - LFV) closed the skies in northern Sweden.

The authority introduced the flight ban from 10pm and all air space north of Luleå but expanded the area down to Skellefteå at around 6am on Thursday.

"The cloud of ash is blowing in from Norway and affecting the western parts of Swedish air space," said Susanne Rundström at Swedavia, the firm which operates 14 publicly-owned airports in Sweden.

The forecast for air services for the remainder of Thursday remains uncertain and depends on the winds, said Björn Stenberg at the Civil Aviation Authority.

"There is a risk that we will be forced to close air space along the Norwegian border down to Mora. However we think that we will be able to keep the air space open around Umeå and down the Norrland coast," he said adding that it is most likely that the area will be extended south at around 11am.

All Norwegian air space is closed due to the cloud of ash emanating from the eruption under a glacier in the Eyjafjallajökull area of Iceland, which is the second in Iceland in less than a month.

Flights in the north of the UK are also experiencing disruption with all airports in Scotland closed, with disruptions at Manchester, Liverpool, Stansted, Newcastle and Birmingham.

The aviation authority is monitoring the situation from a centre in London which is tracking the ash clouds.

The measures amid fears that the clouds of ash could damage aircraft engines.

Air traffic has been severely disrupted across northern Europe by volcanic ash drifting south and east from Iceland.

Airspace was closed or flights cancelled in countries including the UK, the Republic of Ireland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and France.

The ash, which could damage plane engines, came from a volcanic eruption in the south-west of Iceland.

At least 48 hours with no flights.
It will be interesting to see a sky without contrails - maybe some climatic effects will be noticed as in the 911 flight grounding in the US.

Here are links to a sat photo from NOAA with a clear view of the ash cloud as it makes its way up through Norway.

The ash from the Eyjafallajokull Volcano in Iceland swept toward mainland Europe on Thursday, causing air travel chaos as one country after another closed its air space for safety reasons. Volcanic ash can cause jet engines to shut down.  The United Kingdom, France, Ireland, Sweden, Norway, Belgium, Denmark and the Netherlands announced the complete or partial closure of their air space, authorities in each country said, as reported by CNN.

Major flights restrictions in the UK caused by a huge ash cloud from an Icelandic volcano will remain in place until at least 7pm, the National Air Traffic Service has warned.

The ash turned northern Europe into a no-fly zone on Thursday and left hundreds of thousands of air passengers stranded.
A leading volcano expert said the ash could present intermittent problems to air traffic for six months, if the eruption continued.
Even if the disruption, which has also affected transatlantic flights, is short lived, the financial impact on airlines could be significant, a consultant said.
The International Air Transport Association had said only days ago that airlines were slowly coming out of recession.
The volcano began erupting on Wednesday for the second time in a month from below the Eyjafjallajokull glacier.

Here in Norway all flights have been cancelled until today were they have some flights from Værnes airport (just temporary), by Trondheim in mid Norway, all others airports are still closed, and you can say it's chaos, but i assume there are bigger airports in Europa that have it more chaotic.

It seems like it is many of those inland travelers that have tried to get on an train, but they are all fully and many people are stuck were they are now.

Flights across much of Europe will be severely disrupted well into Saturday because of drifting ash ejected from a volcano in Iceland, officials say.

Much of the airspace across northern and western Europe is closed, with fewer than half the usual number of flights expected to operate on Friday.

Hundreds of thousands of passengers in Europe and around the world have been affected.

Scientists say the volcano is still erupting but producing less ash.

More countries imposed either full or partial airspace closures on Friday, while some northern regions began to relax restrictions as the ash cloud slowly drifted south.

Among the latest announcements:

COUNTRIES AFFECTED
Airspace closed:
Belgium
Czech Republic
Denmark
Estonia
Finland
Hungary (from 1700 GMT)
Latvia
Lithuania
Netherlands
Slovakia
Switzerland (from 2200 GMT)
Partial closures:
Austria (closures from 1600 GMT)
France (northern airspace)
Germany (most airports closed)
Norway (limited flights in north)
Poland (most airports closed)
Republic of Ireland (most airspace opened Friday)
Sweden (northern airspace opened Friday)
UK (near-total closure)

Hungary said it would shut its airspace from 1900 (1700 GMT)
Switzerland said it would follow suit from midnight (2200 GMT)
Romania said it would close airspace over the north-west of the country from 0300 (0000 GMT) on Saturday
A ban on flights over England and Wales was extended to 0600 GMT on Saturday. Flights over a large part of Scottish airspace and Northern Ireland will be allowed to resume from 1800 GMT

The experts are saying low risk for people on the ground.

Quote
London, England (CNN) -- The ash from the volcanic eruption in Iceland this week is paralyzing air travel because it is too dangerous for aircraft to fly through it. Those on the ground may be concerned about health effects when the ash falls to Earth, but experts say there is little to worry about.

Some of the latest reports from Iceland say that the Eyjafjallajökull eruption is slowing down, but still very active. Another important thing has to be noted besides the Eyjafjallajökull volcano. Nearby is a much larger and stronger volcano named Katla, which has a history of corellated eruptions with the Eyjafjallajökull. The all big eruptions of Eyjafjallajökull volcano were followed by an eruption of Katla in the past and its possible that it could be the same with this eruption as well. Then, such an eruption of a much bigger volcano could have a big impact on Earth’s climate. But as for now, that is still a big speculation though.

This is seismic acttivity near Katla volcano:

Looking at that chart it would appear with the ramp up that something is going on under Katla.

Never fear, starting in 2011 per the EPA all volcanoes are to be equipped with flue gas scrubbers.   ;)

Interesting USA Today article:

http://www.usatoday.com/tech/science/2010-04-19-1Avolcano19_CV_N.htm

Snip from article:

"When Katla went off in the 1700s, the USA suffered a very cold winter," says Gary Hufford, a scientist with the Alaska Region of the National Weather Service. "The Mississippi River froze just north of New Orleans, and the East Coast, especially New England, had an extremely cold winter. Depending on a new eruption, Katla could cause some serious weather changes."

History Channel is showing a "How The Earth Was Made" tonight and the topic is "Iceland Volcano".  It wasn't recently made, but it's showing is timely.  I tried to watch it, but the camera swinging and the picture speeding up and slowing down made me queasy.  It's too bad.  I'm sure it would be a good show.  Too bad they had to ruin it with effects.  :(

The eruption of Eyjafjallajokull is nothing compare to the Laki eruption 1783, it did kill 20-25% of the population on Iceland.

More and more news people are calling the volcano E=15.  15 is the number of letters after the letter E.  I guess if you're not from Iceland, it's hard to pronounce.

Here's a picture from Iceland. I don't think I would want to be driving behind another vehicle. Can just imagine what that volcanic dust would do to an engine. The air filter must clog up very quickly in such conditions. Dust in a camera would be another issue too...

Exactly what I was thinking when I saw that photo.  Being such a fine powder I would think it would also make it's way around wheel bearing seals, ball joints, tie rod ends, any breathers on the differential, transfer case, engine crankcase, etc.

What a mess that would be to have that dust laying all around like snow on the ground plugging drains and sifting into the house through every little crack.   :-(

I can remember a few weeks after Mt St Helens blew in the 80's and I drove from Seattle back to San Jose. When we went through the area, there was ash everywhere and the dust clouds were horrendous on I-5 - although not as bad as in the picture I uploaded from Iceland. I was in a U-Haul truck and it was covered with extremely fine ash dust. We told the U-Haul dealer in San Jose we had been through the area and he said he would change the air filter right away. I collected a small baby jar full of the ash and still have it. It is extremely fine ash and feels very gritty when you put a little between your fingers. Guess that's why it's used in LAVA soap and other cleaning products.

I saw a program on TV sometime back, either "Air Emergency" or "Seconds From Disaster", that featured a story about a passenger jet that flew into volcanic ash.  It was night and the pilots had no warning about the ash and they had no idea what was happening to them.  Passengers saw flame like streamers emerging from the jets engines and the front surface of the wings were glowing!  The engines started failing and the pilot decided to descend.  When he did that the plane went below the ash and the engines came back to normal.  Not knowing what had happened they returned to the higher altitude.  That put them back into the ash.  This time the pilot shut down the engines, I believe, and again he descended.  Again, the engines started up and returned to normal. It took some time but they did find out what was happening by talking to someone on their radio.  But, they were now blind   8-[ 8-[. They could not see out the front windscreens.  They had been "sandblasted" by the ash particles!!! Whoa! I know they can land with instruments but it cannot be comfortable to not be able to see out the front of the plane!!  Wish I could remember more about the incident.  It was a great show.  It will be on again.  They show them pretty regular.
