Cloud Detection
« on: February 18, 2016, 05:40:53 PM »
Thought this might be worth sharing . . .

Cloud detection by Far Infrared temperature detection.

I have a 10 degree FOV MLx90614 pointing at the sky from under the eaves of the house, it measures ambient and sky temperature via FIR.

When there are no clouds the sky temperature is low (say ambient -20C) and when the there is heavy cloud cover the difference between sky and ambient is very small.

Here's a graph from the last day or so from here in Scotland

I collect the data using a network of wireless devices based around low power labs Moteino and the RFM69HW digital radio transciever in ultra low power mode (batteries last a year +) . . . packaged in 40mm waste pipe fittings for environmental protection . . .

I also use the RFM69 radios to receive data from my Vantage Pro II weather station . . .

Live data here : http://weather.ziplockk.com/live.html

All running on RaspberryPi's as an excellent low power solution . . .

Would you mind sharing the code you are using to read the data from the RFM69 showing the data format?
