Title: What's Your Worst Weather Movie?
Post by: Farmtalk on June 26, 2011, 01:50:33 PM
What's your worst weather movie? There are some really corny ones out there, but in my opinion, Sci-fi's "Ice Twisters" tops them all: Twisters that spawn and shoot shards of ice at people.... #-o

I agree both of those movies were terrible.  "B" movies are better than that.  I"ll take "Attack of The Killer Tomatoes" over either of those. :)

Excluding the "B" and SyFy ("B-") genre since they are intentionally bad, in no particular order...

1. The Fog (another sloppy nterpretation of Stephen King)
2. The Perfect Storm. (no dis' to the Gloucester fishermen)
3. The Day After Tomorrow.
4. An Inconvenient Truth.  (It counts, it won an Oscar)
5. 2012 (not sure if that one counts...  earth sciences?)

Since we're also talking about 80's B-stock, if you like AotKT, you have to also watch "Toxic Avenger" and "C.H.U.D."

(Bring back MST3K!)

You can get all the MST3K you want on Netflix. My son and I average about 3/mo streaming. Even my wife loves it (if she can stay awake as she's a morning person.)

We had an MST3K party once (early 90's) to have the final word with movies we had all anticipated and then ended up hating, where we taped silouettes of Joel and the bots to the bottom of the big 35" and watched "Star Trek 5" and "Highlander 2" and a third movie I don't remember because I didn't do so well at the drinking game we made from our spontaneous commentary.

The Day After Tomorrow
This movie was way too overrated and rerunned about billion times on TBS, TNT, FX, and Fox Movie Channel.
I was tortured by my family with this movie, if it was on TV on some random channel, WE HAD TO WATCH IT!

I love watching bad disaster movies. Another one is "Absolute Zero." As one reviewer on IMDB puts it:

Quote
Take away the hand full of things that were good about "The day After Tomorrow" and pile on a clichéd script and no money, this is what you will get.

It's supposed to take place in Miami, but was apparently filmed in Vancouver. So they place random palm trees around, which does nothing to make it look like Miami ... just Vancouver with random palm trees. Anyway, terrible acting, stupid story, non-believable science ("Science is never wrong!" is said many times throughout), everything you want in a bad disaster movie.

Okay sure the air is -60F at 50,000 ft, but it would compress and heat up significantly if it plummeted to the surface.

Bad month on Comcast......

Metal Tornado......to quote Commander Data....I seem to be missing some of my memory engrams....(Jordi holds them out in his hand)...Oh there they are.
Night of the Twister....my big screen kept shutting off during it....guess I shouldn't have forced it to display it...now the remote won't work...
Ice Twisters........my body went numb and I couldn't get myself off the couch

True that, just like "Inglorious Basterds" [sic] is far removed from reality as a WWII movie, yet it's quite entertaining.  Unfortunately many of the weather movies listed aren't even that.  I too have given up on SyFy, and even Sci and TLC (long ago).  Recently I find more (short) gems on DailyMotion or Vimeo.  But there too resides a lot of excrement, but at least at least self-financed, produced and promoted.  How some "Hollywood" flicks even get investors is beyond me.

That one is due to air on SyFy over here July 4th. It will have to try hard to be worse than 'Super Cyclone' that was just on. Holy cow!!!! It may be "just for entertainment" or whatever but the special effects (or lack of) ruin that even. Driving in a violent storm with tornadic activity and crashing as a result only to kick out a window from their upside down car and climb out into crystal clear weather with blue cloudless skies. Other scenes similar.
On the 1 to 10 scale 'Super Cyclone' has it's place at 0.

With out too many spoilers (wouldn't want to ruin the movie for you  ;)) They are in a car outrunning a tornado that has been chasing them for miles and around city corners and they finally find "safe" shelter in an old abandoned 1950s factory that has walls made of 90% glass windows for lighting.

My wife said that this is worse than a "B" movie, she gave it a "D-"

"AARDVARK FALLS ON THE ICE"   Definitely the worst one I can remember.
The scene opens with Aardvark going to the hardware store and purchasing 50 pounds of calcium chloride and urea to melt the ice built up in his driveway.  The returns , goes around to the back of his Jeep and falls on a patch of ice, breaking his arm.    The rest of the movie involves a lot of whining, complaining and the like.

Yup the worst movie I have seen

No one nominated "Twister?"

Poor plot, over acted (by professionals who should have told the director how corny the script sounded, and then refused to act), a storm that makes growling dog/bear noises, and worst of all, the cow.  Like she's going to be mooing and audible while hit with winds strong enough to pick her up, and standing in a normal position while whirling about?

The low budgets can be partially forgiven for the fact they couldn't hire better special effects people, or better actors or whatever.

But a Hollywood studio movie with this lack of quality is pathetic.

Keep in mind the question was "Worst Weather Movie".  While "Twister" was not good, it was at least more entertaining than the others mentioned on here.  Of course, my opinion.  Helen Hunt back then was pretty pleasing to the eyes.

Mr. Okie,
You do, indeed, have a point about Ms. Hunt.

And, not having suffered through the others (except the one about the freezing of everything faster than if Liquid Nitrogen had been poured on it) I am a bit limited in my choices for poorest movie.

I do hate it when they really screw up the science, but then again facts keep getting in the way of a good story or movie, and to ask me to do the temporary suspension of disbelief thing, it had better be a fantasy or something that doesn't require water to run uphill or something.

You guys live much more interesting lives than I do.

But reading some of the names gives me a list of movies to skip over the channel showing them when I finally get to hold the remote control.

I guess I can always find an old rerun of The Wild, Wild West somewhere....

I'm currently suffering through this: "Arctic Blast"  http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1523267/

I thought it might be good as it has Michael Shanks, the guy who played Daniel Jackson on Stargate SG-1.

I was wrong.

There's a lot wrong with this move, but one thing I don't get is its title, as the story is set in Tasmania.... so shouldn't it be "Antarctic Blast"?

Even the story description in the link is messed up with that one,

"When a solar eclipse sends a colossal blast of super chilled air towards the earth, it then sets off a catastrophic chain of events that threatens to engulf the world in ice and begin a new Ice Age."

How does anything send a blast of air through the vacuum of space towards the Earth?(http://i588.photobucket.com/albums/ss324/DanS_photo_09/thinking.jpg) (http://s588.photobucket.com/user/DanS_photo_09/media/thinking.jpg.html)

What's next, Piranha-nado Disaster? Rolling Eyes
Reminds me of one Piranha movie where they grew to the size of VW beetles and attacked Miami. They would pick up speed in the water, jump into the air at the shore line, then explode in a big fireball once they hit a building.

At least Tiffany was smart enough to not list her last name....
The timing of the exploding fish is perfect. They only explode when they hit a building or land, and not when the guy is on his back kicking them away.  Fortunately for him, they don't seem to explode when hit with a shoe, or at least one of the star's shoes.

(CNN) -- Severe weather alert: Another "Sharknado" is blowing onto our shores.
Syfy was so pleased with the reaction to its original TV movie and how Twitter users devoured it, the network confirmed on Wednesday there will be a "Sharknado 2." This time the fictional flying sharks will be attacking the Big Apple in a film set to premiere in 2014. (http://www.cnn.com/2013/07/17/showbiz/tv/sharknado-sequel-announced/index.html)

That true because you always like who they picked to play in it.

From the FOX website:

"Each entry into the "Sharknado" franchise has upped the ante, while keeping the fun. And the guest cast of the third film continues in that tradition with David Hasselhoff  playing Fin's father, Gil, and Bo Derek as April's mother, May.

Also appearing are Mark Cuban with a cameo as the president of the United States, Ann Coulter as the vice president, Michele Bachmann as herself, Jerry Springer as manic tourist Mr. White, Washington Redskins tackle Tom Compton as a reporter, NSYNC singer Chris Kirkpatrick as a pool lifeguard, and Chris Jericho as Bruce, the roller coaster ride operator."

I don't even know the name of it, I think it was on HBO or something this spring, with tornadoes all super defined, small in diameter, with some people running along the street towards it to get into some building, while others were being blown so hard by the wind that they were swept away or hanging onto lampposts.

Needless to say I didn't hang around to watch the credits to find out what the name was.

At least it didn't have mooing cows looking about complacently while being sucked up into the funnel and spinning around, or the storm making growling and evil noises like Twister did.

A question:  How in hell does some suit sitting in Hollywood sign off on such trash?  Even without big or minor league talent signed on, these have to cost hundreds of thousands if not a few million minimum.

I haven't seen a movie in a theater in over 20 years.  They don't make anything that appeals to me.  The way I see it, when they come up with a concept for a movie, the first stop is the computer graphics shop to see what they can do.  Then they write a script around the graphics.  Then they add people occasionally.  They really don't have to act, just know how to move in front of a green screen.  Plus all they do lately is recycle classic movies and TV.  I saw a commercial for a new movie coming out for The Man From UNCLE.  really?  And it doesn't even have David McCallum with a cameo.  People will pay money for the silliest things anymore.

The short answer is they make money on it. As to why I watch these movies - My other hobby from weather is movies. I have a home theater in my basement and enjoy many different types of movies. I don't enjoy sports, hunting, fishing, racing, golf, etc... I enjoy movies to take me away from the real works and into another reality. Obviously dumb movies like Sharknado are not meant to be taken seriously and neither was The Holly Grail.

I saw a commercial for a new movie coming out for The Man From UNCLE.  really?  And it doesn't even have David McCallum with a cameo.  People will pay money for the silliest things anymore.
I saw the previews for The Man From UNCLE while waiting for "Ant-man" to start. It didn't look nearly as silly as watching 7foot+ tall grown bounce a ball back and forth for hours to have the final score 103 to 104.

To each their own!

I haven't seen a movie of any kind in probably that long.  Turned my TV off several months ago and haven't watched anything since.

Dr. O I covet your theater.  Mine's pretty capable, but nothing like that!

As a science teacher, for pure bad science it's hard to beat "The Core".

There is no other option but to land the space shuttle in a drainage ditch.

First explain why you can't go to the core of the Earth, then go anyway.

When we get there we will "restart the core by setting off nuclear charges?"

A guy in the desert with no money builds an indestructible ship for fun, not to mention a rock melting laser?

Lets build a ship with disposable modules, then fill the modules with critical components so they are required.

Let's send a guy outside of the ship into the magma to fix stuff.

Let's have one really ugly guy control all the traffic on the entire Internet.

At least the whales are on our side.

Funny, my ex asked me a couple of days ago, "Don't you watch anything new?" I basically said "no" then proceeded to start on my new box set of "Quantum Leap" I just received in the mail. (make sure and get the PAL version if able, the American version is butchered.)

I dont have much free time, but when I have it, I usually spend it entirely doing something related to my station (template etc.) or I go out sometimes with friends etc. I never really liked reading books (apart from encyclopedias, at a time when internet was still not that common :D) or watched movies, but now I dont at all. The only thing I watch is every day 20 mins I watch the daily news and even that I always do when I come home and online from the internet archive. And then maybe once a month I watch some one-hour documentary and thats it. I dont even have a TV at home. And I think actually many people in my generation and younger are basically not watching tv at all and even those that do watch movies, they usually do so on a computer, yet they spend hours watching youtube every day.... I can see this first-hand at home with my younger sister... no books, no movies... she goes out with her friends too, but if she is at home, it is either facebook or youtube..

There is a few movies I like, but not many and as I said I only watch documentaries these days. My all-time favorite is Forest Gump and I also liked Star Wars, so this yr actually I am looking forward to the new Star Wars movie, after so many yrs... but Im still probably going to wait before it is available somewhere on the web rather than going to see it to the cinema.

We haven't seen it lately, but for many years there was a running joke between my wife and I about finding re-runs of the old Wild West movies.  Very interesting scripts (sort of) and the camera work actually had been very good, and they even had film of a real steam locomotive in various settings.

Are there any left any more that they could use, or again would it be CGI?

I remember the brohaha about Titanic when it came out (sort of wx related so I hope I'm not straying too far OT).  The director thought or still does that he was hot stuff.  Yet the fly overs of the decks of the ship showed such poor animations that it was very distracting, knowing it came out well after something like Jurrasic Park did.  My son could do better with Maya than they did, yet it won a Oscar if I remember correctly.

I have a friend who really loves movies for just the reasons stated here, escape and going to worlds that I'll never visit or good documentaries on Frontline or PBS.  Yet those are far between or so it seems.

The theater setup looks wonderful.  I'll have to go back to see if there is a fresh popcorn machine in the back, since it is very difficult to go to a real movie and not buy (usually yesterday's cold) popcorn at a very expensive price.

Glad everyone has something they can enjoy.
