Best Bang for Your Buck?
« on: June 22, 2014, 01:42:04 PM »
I'm looking to turn my website into more of a blog format. I have ixwebhosting, and after 3 years, I think I'm about ready to switch. I had another price hike, and I'm just getting tired of the increases. I'm using blogger right now, but I'd like to change it into a custom domain name. What all does everyone else use for their sites?

Well, it was $4.99/mo, but they were wanting to increase it to $7.99/mo, so  I decided that was too much.

I use ICDSoft and have had very good luck with them.  When Superstorm/Hurricane Sandy went through the NorthEast, they were down maybe 6 hours tops, plus their customer service support is outstanding. The few issues I've have had were resolved in 15 minutes or LESS.

I use Hostmonster.com   I am very happy with them. they notify me if and when they shut down for maintenence and someone is always at the phone to call.  I registered my url  for the next 3 years and they keep track on that as well.  Check them out.

I use WD and upload every 15 min or sometimes more.. I have no bandwidth limits with them.

I use Bluehost which has been 3.99 a month for the past three years. We have very few down moments, maybe 2 or three a year but overall I love the web service. No bandwidth, ftp or disk space limits.

I use ICDSoft and have had very good luck with them.

Just passed the 10 year mark with them and can't remember a single outage or price increase.  In fact, they've added a number of things and increase capacity while offering discounts.

I use both 1and1.com and ICDSOFT.COM. Both have been very stable and reliable. Only one major outage on ICDSOFT some years ago when a back-hoe cut through a main regional transmission line somewhere in the NorthEast. That caused lots of hosting companies to go dark for an extended period of time. If I remember correctly, ICDSOFT was off-line for only a few hours though.

Don't forget E-Rice.

True.  I'll never understand why so many people pass up E-rice, unless they believe it's too good of a deal to be true.   Web space, 100mb, from them is $10 a year.  I don't know the last time they raised the price.   For yearly domain registration, you can use namecheap for $10.  If there's cheaper, it may not be as reliable or able to deal with php.

Also the 2nd home page using modified AltDashboard 6.95 at http://stillwaterweather.com/2ndhome.php

No.

You have to register your own.
Than you can point the domain to their servers.

I use both 1and1.com and ICDSOFT.COM.
1and1 here too, I have several sites some are rather important so tacked the weather pages onto it.
In four years I had one mysterious episode where I seemed to be blocked from viewing my own sites for about 24 hours but everyone else could see them.
Support was a bit disappointing when I contacted them about this to be honest, and blamed my ISP, who blamed 1and1...hmmm... pleased it resolved itself after few hours.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I'm probably going to go with E-Rice just because of the affordability. I don't have a very in-depth website, as my rebuild will be pretty basic. I appreciate EVERYONE's input  8-)
