Weather Radar Apps
« on: October 02, 2016, 06:09:25 PM »
What's the consensus around here? I figure a lot of people use Radarscope, but I was interested to see if there are any other products that people are using.

I have a Windows phone. It's a 640 XL, and if you have a windows phone, then you're able to give Mike Gibson's MRLevel 3 a shot. I think it's a steal at $30, and it's the only program that I use for weather on the phone. Here's a couple of grabs of the program in use.

What do you use?

I would be surprised if there wasnt a decent alternative for iOS and Android, it is in fact usually the other way around, Windows Phones are the biggest problem when it comes to the apps available and MS has even already said they resign and stop developing phones...

I know about one really good app, but I guess you wont be interested given it only covers the Czech Republic :D

I use the Android app wX.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=joshuatee.wx
It's the most complete weather app I have ever used. It has everything you need in one app.
The best part is the developer is very quick to take care of any bugs and is extremely responsive.
Another thing is that it's free and has NO ads. It's also uber customizable. Too many to mention.
Really the only downside to it is that since it's opened source he can't legally allow for any 3rd party data services.
He recently switched from using some private sector data to all all NOAA and NWS data.
If you have an Android phone give it a try. You wont be disappointed.
He just started work on an IOS version but by his own admission it's about 18 months away.

I actually purchased Radarscope this weekend just to see what it's about.
While it is a good app it's lacking in customization features. You can only animate 7 images. The L2 data is very good as it comes from Weather Decision Technologies servers so the updates are very fast.
They do have a pro version that offers more animated images, live lightning, and an inspector tool where you long press on the data and the pertinent info comes up. That's sounds cool but not really worth an extra $10 a year.
Over all it is a good app but I'm not sure I'll keep it.

I have it on my Mac as well.  Since GRlevelX  won't work on the Mac,  this works fine.  I also have RadarScope on my phone  This along with MyRadar Pro,  really helps me when I am out in the car away from shelter.  I can see what is going on around me.

I also have Pykl3.
A good app with a lot of customization but with no L2 I have retired it.
I contacted them about adding it but they feel the file size is too big. And it is quite large. I believe one file is almost 2MB in size as opposed to one file size of L3 is about 40KB. Big difference for sure but the amount of data is what does it for me.
That L2 data has spoiled me.  :-)

I have used Radarscope for the last 6 years. Absolutely love it. If one has an Allisonhouse account with GR3, you can get radar data from them at no extra cost, and it increases your frame count from 6 to 20, plus several additional layers to choose from.

Didn't know you could include Allisonhouse with Radarscope. That's a pretty sweet feature.

If I had an Android phone, I'd probably give it and pykl3 a shot.  8-)
