Tornadoes Kill At Least Two People In Oklahoma
« on: May 09, 2016, 08:57:39 PM »
There's been some tornadoes in Oklahoma on Monday, including near my town.  The first picture shows the structure of a super cell north of town.  The other a tornado that dropped from it.  Tornado sirens were sounded, but, thankfully, tornadoes stayed north in the countryside.  The stormy weather pretty much bypassed Stillwater, so all that happened were some sprinkles and distant thunder.

Statewide story of the tornadoes associated with fatalities here:  http://www.news9.com/story/31928689/tornado-touches-down-near-elmore-city

Here's what the Stillwater Emergency Management Agency said about the storm.  (Mulhall and Orlando about 18 miles west of Stillwater.)

Lots of events today. Well that thunderstorm that initiated around the Mulhall and Orlando area grew very quickly and matured into a very strong Thunderstorm.

We began watching that storm just a little after 5pm with the help of Payne County Emergency Management and our own SEMA Storm Spotters.

The NWS issued the first Thunderstorm Warning at approximately 5:20PM for hail and wind. Then at approximately 5:35PM the NWS issued a Tornado Warning. We had storm spotters in the area along with OHP, PCSO, PCEMA and OSUEM giving us locations, observations and storm reports.

Based on reports from trained spotters and working with the NWS, we activated our Outdoor Warning Systems at approximately 1732hrs. This was primarily for the Lake McMurtry area and Lake Carl Blackwell area. As the storm tracked almost due East we continued to activate the system followed by Public Address, letting people know of the impending danger.

Approximately 45 minutes later the Thunderstorm and Tornado had cleared Payne County and moved into Noble County/Pawnee County. We did activate the Public Address system and our mass notification system for the "all clear".

We have had no reports of injuries or fatalities, but we have have some reports of damage to homes, barns, trees and power poles just inside of the Noble county area. The Red Cross is helping those individuals with their needs.

Thank you for being weather aware and activating your safety plans this evening.

How the storm looked outside the El Vaquero Mexican Restaurant on the far west side of Stillwater, a "saucer and bomb" type looking cloud.  There's a 30% chance of another storm on Wednesday:

Absolutely awesome close up video showing tornado near Wynnewood, OK crossing the road.    This is well to the south of Oklahoma City.

WOW! One of the best twister videos I've seen showing just how destructive they can be. 200+ mph winds no doubt. I went to Youtube full screen.

¨Definitely an interesting video, but I just find it hard to believe when seeing some of the people driving with their cars right towards it. I mean yes, probably doing this intentionally as storm chasers, but seeing the tornado basically changing direction every second, i would call this not a storm chaser, but more like a suicider. Sometimes it is just too much...

Some of these chasers are doing it for a living, trying to get the money shot.
I guess its hazards of the job, policeman and firefighters face danger daily saving lives, but chasers also serve the public with early tornado sightings that just can't be picked up on Doppler radar.
One of the famous storm chasers was killed by a tornado a few years back..

I saw the car driving toward the tornado, the first thing I thought of he had loved ones he was trying to reach.

I know, Ive seen a documentary about it and also heard about that guy being killed.

But to be quite honest, I think sometimes it even looks better from a distance, of course not too far, but getting too close is not just dangerous but it is then even hard to capture it, it moves very fast in front of you, you need a very wide angle lens.

BTW, all three chasers were killed in the El Reno tornado of May '13, not one. The team was the "3rd stringers" on Discover channels Storm Chasers.

^ Make that four.

Quote
2013 El Reno tornado

The tornado killed four storm chasers, the first known deaths in the history of storm chasing.[1] Although the tornado remained over mostly open terrain, dozens of storm chasers unaware of its immense size were caught off-guard. Along Highway 81, TWISTEX scientist and engineer Tim Samaras, along with his son Paul and research partner Carl Young, died near the Regional Airport. Paul and Young were ejected from their Chevrolet Cobalt by the storm's sub-vortex while Tim was still buckled in the passenger's seat next to Young's driving seat. Local resident Richard Henderson, who decided to follow the storm, lost his life in that same area. He snapped a picture of the tornado from his cellular phone before it struck him.[2] Other chasers, including Mike Bettes of The Weather Channel and Reed Timmer, were either injured or had their vehicles damaged.

Very interesting read on the El Reno tornado.
"Former Discovery Channel storm chaser Tim Samaras (an engineer), his son Paul Samaras (a photographer), and Tim's longtime chase partner Carl Young (a meteorologist), all professional storm chasers with the TWISTEX project were Killed by one of many sub vortexes.  With rapid enlargement to a width of 2.6 mi (4.2 km) in diameter in about 30 seconds,"Weather Channel and TWISTEX vehicles entered the tornado through the less intense north / northwestern side, then were impacted by the internal sub-vortex, which contained radar-indicated winds approaching 200 mph and was moving in a complex quasi-trochoidal pattern, sometimes nearly stationary, sometimes with forward speeds over 100 mph. "

"Revised RaXPol analysis found winds of 302 mph (486 km/h) well above ground level and ≥291 mph (468 km/h) below 10 m (33 ft) with some subvortices moving at 175 mph (282 km/h)"
and considered the most dangerous tornado ever. Hundreds maybe thousands would of perished had it stayed together as it entered more densely populated areas.

I had the same impression as Jachym, they are way to close to that for comfort!  The debris cone can be very deceiving.

The car driving toward it, I thought of the dummies here that drive around barriers into flooded washed with predictable results.

We've had so many of these folks we have a "Stupid Motorist" law that if they live they pay the entire cost of their rescue and it aint' cheap.

This person may have been trying to reach loved ones but still not a very wise move....

Those are some incredible photos and movie though...  I guess our thirst for them drives a lot of these guys to take some big risks...

Maximum EF for the tornado has been upgraded to 4.   A mobile Doppler radar maxed out the winds to 216 mph. Two 76 year old men were killed while in their own homes.  At least one of them was thought to be a trailer house.  Maybe if they were crazy enough to have  followed the tornado chasers, they would still be alive.

Tonight's forecast has a 30% chance of thunderstorms with no mention of them possibly being severe.  Bigger chance for severe weather Saturday-Monday.
