Can you imagine getting caught out in that?
Experienced a hail storm in Odessa Texas with baseball and grapefruit size hail when I was a kid. Broke out all our south facing windows and pummeled every vehicle not garaged breaking all windshields in the neighborhood. I remember how scared I was huddled in the hall, watching hail shooting across the living room floor.

Light hail does not cause much damage but heavy hail can cause a serious damage to automobiles, skylights, glass-roofed structures and farmers' crops. The damage that hail cause to the roof often goes unnoticed until further structural damage is seen, such as leaks or cracks. It is also one of the most significant thunderstorm hazards to air crafts.

Hi, what causes hail to be so big?
Title: Re: HOLY HAIL!!!!
Post by: ValentineWeather on April 20, 2017, 08:08:14 AM
Cumulonimbus with very strong updrafts 110+ mph speed super cools liquid forming hailstones until they get so heavy they fall. The taller and stronger the updraft the bigger the hailstone gets. Super Cells that can also form tornadoes have the largest hailstones.

The largest hail stone was in Vivan, SD over 7 inches. It looks like a lot of ice stuck together.

The updrafts to keep that in the air was well over 300 mph. It also caused a 1.5 mile wide tornado

Largest I've seen here last 3 years are quarter size so going by the supplied chart 49 mph updraft. Historically however much larger hailstones have fallen here damaging parts of town just not over last 3 years.

I was about 9 or 10 but still clearly remember this event, watching the curtains flying back as the chunks of hail hit them and shot into the far wall of dining room.  The noise was deafening, I couldn't even hear the screams of my cousins right next to me.  I think we all thought it was over.

I wonder if that's the same year that Norfolk, NE had the same type hail storm.   I was about the same age.   Late afternoon, we saw the skies turn green, then all hell broke loose.   Don't remember the size of the hail,  but it did so much damage.   Broke the windows on the north side of the house.   Remember watching hail coming down the hallway.   It ripped all the leaves off the trees.   So many roofs had to be redone.   I remember the sound was deafening.   Storms usually don't scare me.......that one did.

Agree, absolutely absurd an airbus would fly into a TS. Why many won't fly international flights.

Here, they almost always won't even fly into a Tcu, let alone a Cb. Unreal.

Just read that the Captain is being "hailed" as a hero.  :-)
Whata joke. I couldn't fire him fast enough.

Happens too often someone screws up and gets labeled as hero on coverup. Remember the 1967 USS Forrestal fire what a shame that was.

Oh yeah, the flight deck footage was (is?) standard viewing in boot camp.

Did they mention the pilot's improper weapon arming prior to takeoff and then the same wise ass did a wet start stunt (showing off) causing large flame and subsequent electrical surge launching the armed rocket across the deck into parked planes.

And then made him look like some kind of hero.

I don't remember the hero part. What did he do for that?

if you do some research from people who actually live in Istanbul
you will find out that this thunderstorm and hail storm developed very fast, i.e this plane has been caught out
he is being hailed a hero for landing the plane with a radar that was damaged and no visibility out of the front window

its easy to be an arm chair critic though

BS. Golf ball sized hail doesn't "just happen" in seconds, which is what these idiots are implying. He intentionally flew into something they had ZERO business being in, and the "hero" got them out of trouble that they should have never been in in the first place. As far as the radar not working, hopefully that was AFTER the damage and not before hand, because if they left without a working wx radar and still flew into a T-storm.....Either way, complete incompetence.
Don't know about this country's regulations, but in the US, A MEL (minimum equipment list) must be met before flight, and wx radar is one. It no worky, you no fly.

Here was one from 1977 before Doppler radar and many of the modern technologies pilots and controllers now have.

I'm certainly assuming it was, I mean they are departing into T-storms for crying out loud, with 127 paying passengers on board. Even more reason to condemn the action, do like every other commercial air-carrier, wait it out.
