Title: Wunderground PWS Icon "Ranking"
Post by: theliman on October 25, 2018, 07:43:31 PM
Good evening!

I've had a PWS on Wunderground reporting for about a year now. New guy popped up a week ago a couple of blocks over - he needs to get off my turf! (no no, it's very exciting and good for the community). Anyway, on the map his PWS circle overlaps mine, and his is the "full circle" on top. Zoom out, and I'm completely covered! How does this work? I call seniority!

This is an issue I've been trying to solve myself also in finding out what the method of seniority overlap is on the map. I think to some degree it is by age of the station that has been around longest. I've determined this by creating test stations just beside my main station. And I also look to see how old other stations are base on how back their history goes and then comparing that to how they overlap with others. But I'm not 100% certain that this is always the case.

I think it also depends on the map you are using as different maps seem to behave differently. The map you see when you pull up your station dashboard on the web is one where seniority seems to be most consistent. But if you use the website Wondermap then it seems to be random dumb luck of how the map is centered and zoomed as to which station shows up first during zooming and how they overlap.

I wish it could be consistent. My recommendation for Weather Underground is that this should be a consideration that is tied into station data  quality control and ranking. Meaning a better station should overlap a nearby station with poor data quality even if the poor data station has been reporting longer.

I don't know how it is determined but doesn't appear to be seniority nor quality/regular reporting.  I have 3 stations on my property reporting to WU and the more recent Bloomsky with variable uploads is usually the one first visible.

Enjoy,
Paul

Yeah, there I can't think of what it would be - sounds like there's no sound logic behind it. Not a surprise I guess
