I build scientific exhibits and I'm wondering if anyone knows of a museum in your area that could use an "old fashioned" seismograph display. Old fashioned ones still use large rotating drums to trace earthquake motion.
Professional seismologists now use all computerized recording, however it is not especially attractive for a public display. Going to a museum and watching earthquakes traced on a flat screen is about as exciting as taking a trip to the video store at the mall.
The biggest objection to the operating the old recorders is changing the paper and inking the pens. However, I have thermal paper that uses heated pens that don't require inking. The recording period can also be extended to 48 hours between paper changes.
There's a lot of old style drum recorders available as surplus equipment from the USGS and I can also build them from scratch.
