Title: NOAA Stream Stopped
Post by: ComPilot on September 17, 2014, 08:59:06 PM
My NOAA stream stopped a couple of days ago. Will not connect to the server. Anyone know if WU is having server problems?

I can confirm my steam is down too.

Mine too.. the wunderground stream via edcast tries connecting, disconnects, waits 10 seconds and retries (ad infinitum).

I switched to ScannerCast when I upgraded to Win7 a few months back and so far it is for the most part holding connection.  It was acting strange and I had to manually restart it a couple times this past week so I switched over to RadioFeed for a couple days and it was acting the same way.  When it kicked out I think it was due to a password error.

Another thing I've noticed is the Flash Player image has went mia on my webpage and also on their website for me.

Yeah, I got the same thing. An authentication error when I tried to connect..  Invalid password, etc.  I filled out a support ticket and sent to weather underground.  Who knows if I'll get a response.

After I posted here within the next hour mine when down and has stayed down.  Getting the error:

Yup, I got same error.

I went to here, http://audioplayer.wunderground.com/  and http://www.wunderground.com/wxradio/

Only a few stations listed and couple I checked are still working.

Seems like WU does not care about the NOAA streaming project. We are all trying to provide a service and they are not very serious about keeping the stations online. Last time it was down for almost a week. Emailed them a couple of days ago and still have not received a response.
Title: Re: NOAA Stream Stopped
Post by: Mark / Ohio on September 19, 2014, 12:58:26 AM
I agree.  Seems like we worry about keeping it going more then they do.  Worse part is that the streams are not just benefiting WU any longer.  NOAA has links to them and other Apps are using the streams.  My county EMA uses my stream in their app.

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/fairfield-county-ema-ohio/id860019260?mt=8

Mainly for this reason I have my weather radio, computer, and DSL modem all on UPS to buy some time until I can get my generator up and running during power failures.

Anyone know of a way to stream on your own web host server, instead of going through weather underground?  Just in case they decide to completely remove the radio stream.  Not sure about anyone else, but the NOAA radio page on my site is quite popular based on stats.
Title: Re: NOAA Stream Stopped
Post by: saratogaWX on September 19, 2014, 12:01:58 PM
Sadly, to build your own stream you'd need a dedicated Linux (virtual) server and Icecast (http://icecast.org/).
You can't run streams on a shared hosting environment -- you'd have to have a real or virtual server to make it work.

OK.  Thanks!  Looks like all stations have been taken off the Weather Underground site now.  Bummer.

I wondered about sending a feed to one of the police scanner sites. Locally the HAM severe weather call in frequency is being rebroadcast on the net.

Hi Mark,

Radioreference.com used to NOT allow the rebroadcast of the NWS radio network, but I haven't looked in a long time, so that may have changed.

That was the main one I was thinking of.  I googled and broadcastify looks like another possible.  I guess we'll just have to ask around of those types of places and see if any are open to us as an option.

Edit hopefully WU does not have some sort of a copyright sort of deal filed with doing it.  Just thought of that.

The wunderground streaming server was rebooted today. Maybe they are having some technical difficulties they are trying to resolve. Before the server uptime was June 30, 2014.

Edit:  Has anyone tried reconnecting this afternoon?  I'm at work and do not have access from work to restart the stream.

I received a note from John Celenza of WU saying they were working on resolving the issue.. that was at 10am Pacific.. must be a thornier issue to resolve than expected.  The Icecast server has no streams currently.

Server still offline this morning, cannot even view the status page.  Must have forgot to pay their bill.   :roll:

Wonder if they were hit with some sort of a DOS attack or hacked?  You'd think if it was only a case of a server melt down they would have pulled a backup and/or reinstalled on another server and have been back up long before now.   :-k  You'd also think they would post a notice or send an email like they do in a station not reporting issue to let the member/data contributors know what was going on.

Edit: Some of the tech guys names are not clickable on the staff list.  I don't remember in the past if they were or not.  But have to wonder if some have jumped ship since the change in ownership.

Kinda strange, AudioStream goes down the same time a whole raft of Shoutcast TV and radio stations do. :-" [-X

Ever since Winamp went on the auction block, all streaming services seemed to suffer. #-o :shock:

It's counting my station as *4* visits for every page reload. :-P

On the bright side, I have yet to be booted off of WU for bad data in the three weeks that my station has been reporting to them.....  =D>

I don't know what you're using to generate the code for the audio player control, but currently your wxradio.php page only has
Code: [Select]
<div id="main-copy"><br />

<h3>NOAA Weather Radio</h3>
<img src="sw_logo.gif" align="right" border="0" width="55" height="55" alt="" />
<br/>
<hr id="snippets-1" /> <br/>
<br />

<br />

<br />
<br />
<center>
        <div id="flashcontent">You need to upgrade your Flash Player.</div>
<script type='text/javascript' src='http://icons.wunderground.com/scripts/swfobject.js'></script>
<script type="text/javascript">var so = new SWFObject("http://www.wunderground.com/radio/radio-player-v16.swf", "radio-player", "210", "100", "8", "#FFFFFF", true);
 so.setAttribute('xiRedirectUrl', 'http://www.wunderground.com/wxradio/index.html'); so.addParam('allowScriptAccess','always');
 so.addParam('movie', 'http://www.wunderground.com/radio/radio-player-v16.swf');
 so.addParam('quality', 'high');
 so.addParam('bgcolor', '#ffffff');
 so.addVariable('XMLMode', 'HTTP');
 so.addVariable('strStreamURL', 'http://www.wunderground.com/wxradio/requestxml.html?action=getallstations'); so.write("flashcontent");</script>
<table><tr><td><p class="titleSubtle">Copyright &copy; 2011 Weather Underground, Inc.</p></td></tr></table>
</center>
<br />
</div>
in the main-copy area.  I'd suggest changing
Code: [Select]
http://www.wunderground.com/radio/radio-player-v16.swf to
Code: [Select]
http://www.wunderground.com/radio/radio-player.swf in the script.  That's what I'm using with no issues.

Title: Re: NOAA Stream Stopped
Post by: saratogaWX on September 23, 2014, 10:33:15 AM
Yes, they do.. you can use a native HTML5 player for that stream.

In my page I have
Code: [Select]
$isApple = preg_match('|AppleWebKit/.*Mobile/|i',$_SERVER['HTTP_USER_AGENT'])?true:false;
to detect the browser type.

If $isApple is true, then I generate an HTML5 page instead of a XHTML 1.0-Strict page and use
Code: [Select]
      <?php if(!$isApple) {  // NOT Apple browser.. use Flash control

?>

     <div id='flashcontent'>You need to upgrade your Flash Player</div>
<script type='text/javascript' src='http://icons.wunderground.com/scripts/swfobject.js'></script>
<script type='text/javascript'>
var so = new SWFObject('http://www.wunderground.com/radio/radio-player.swf', 'radio-player', '210', '100', '8', '#FFFFFF', true);
  so.setAttribute('xiRedirectUrl', 'http://www.wunderground.com//wxradio/index.html');
  so.addParam('allowScriptAccess','always');
  so.addParam('movie','http://www.wunderground.com/radio/radio-player.swf');
  so.addParam('quality','high'); so.addParam('bgcolor','#ffffff');
  so.addVariable('XMLMode', 'HTTP');
  so.addVariable('strStreamURL', 'http://www.wunderground.com/wxradio/requestxml.html%3Faction%3Dgetsinglefromallstations%26stationid%3DKCASARATOGA%7C115%7C519');
  so.write('flashcontent');</script>
      <?php } else { // is Apple.. use HTML5 native player ?>
      NOAA Radio KEC49: 162.55<br/>
      Monterey/San Francisco Bay<br/>
      &nbsp;<br/>
      &nbsp;<br/>
        <audio controls autoplay>
          <source src="http://audioplayer.wunderground.com/KCASARATOGA/Saratoga.mp3.m3u" type="audio/mpeg">
          Your device does not support HTML5 audio.
        </audio>
      &nbsp;<br/>
      &nbsp;<br/>
      &nbsp;<br/>
      <?php // end HTML5 native player ?>
to use either the flash control or HTML5 <audio> as need be.

Best regards,
Ken

Thanks for that.  I think when I build a new weather PC this winter, I may dive into the Wunderground stream.

I found for my city, they are posting 3 MP3 files.  One for Hourly Conditions, 7 day forecast, and Climate history.  I went ahead and just used HTML5 only players to link to those.  Adding the "live" broadcast will be the last step.

Glad to hear that WU is having problems and not me. I don't even get the player app on my page,or any other device for that matter. A quick look at my upload and I'm still connected and showing audio leaving here but that was prior to reading this info.

I will keep a close watch here for any alternatives to WU or otherwise.

I've been battling the same thing for a long time now, maybe a year or two with the newer auto playing flash player code and part of the time I would see the issue on WU's page.  "Flashplayer needs updated" yet other times it would work.  For a year or more I ended up using one of the very first versions of their player when they first started the streaming project, one that did not play until you told it to, that I had saved on a non public page that oddly enough worked reliably up until this last round of server changes over the last couple of months.

For now I gave up and put a link to their standalone player page for windows users direct to my stream:

http://www.wunderground.com/wxradio/smallplayer.html?stationid=FCW%7C622%7C2207

 and a link to the mp3 for iOS users:

http://audiostream.wunderground.com/FCW/Lancaster.mp3.m3u

I'm wondering if there could other code on my page and/or code format errors that is interfering with it rendering properly?  One thing I have not tried is putting up a separate test page that is blank aside from the player code to see if I could get it to work that way.   :-k

I found a page at http://www.thorntonweather.com/weather-radio.php# (http://www.thorntonweather.com/weather-radio.php#) that uses a script that opens up the selectable player.  It doesn't default to the local NOAA station, though.  To do that does someone know of an addition to make without breaking it?  The script as follows:

<embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.wunderground.com/radio/radio-player.swf" width="210" height="100" style="undefined" id="radio-player" name="radio-player" bgcolor="#ffffff" quality="high" allowscriptaccess="always" movie="http://www.wunderground.com/radio/radio-player.swf" flashvars="XMLMode=HTTP&amp;strStreamURL=http://www.wunderground.com/wxradio/requestxml.html?action=getallstations"></embed>

My NOAA stream stopped a couple of days ago. Will not connect to the server. Anyone know if WU is having server problems?

Mine has been working but after a internet outage today I notice it will not connect. We were on generator power the whole time but evidently the backup power supply batteries at Comcast's supplies are bad.

Just wondering if WU quit supporting the project or such.

I was wondering the same Wayne. Maybe they have decided to stop supporting the project. That would be unfortunate!

It sure would. Just seems they are not too worried about that server and when it needs attention they are slow to act,kinda like they wished they didn't have that responsibility.  Don't leave us with many real options if they do discontinue the service.

Mine is working as well.
WU must have been lurking and heard our complaints and took care of the outage  =D&gt;

I'd sent a note to John Celenza at WU (copying support).  He replied today with

Happy New Year!

We kicked the server again. I need to add better monitoring to the service so I know first the it goes down.

Thanks again for letting me know,
John

I'm hopeful that they'll run a player or two to 'proof' the entire system.  What seems to have failed this time was the collection system not working, and the web-presence for the radios not getting updated with the lack of front-end connections.

Best regards,
Ken
