Evaluation a tsunami has been generated that could cause damage along coastlines of all islands in the state of hawaii. Urgent action should be taken to protect lives and property. A tsunami is a series of long ocean waves. Each individual wave crest can last 5 to 15 minutes or more and extensively flood coastal areas. The danger can continue for many hours after the initial wave as subsequent waves arrive. Tsunami wave heights cannot be predicted and the first wave may not be the largest. Tsunami waves efficiently wrap around islands. All shores are at risk no matter which direction they face. The trough of a tsunami wave may temporarily expose the seafloor but the area will quickly flood again. Extremely strong and unusual nearshore currents can accompany a tsunami. Debris picked up and carried by a tsunami amplifies its destructive power. Simultaneous high tides or high surf can significantly increase the tsunami hazard. The estimated arrival time in hawaii of the first tsunami wave is 0307 am hst fri 11 mar 2011 messages will be issued hourly or sooner as conditions warrant.

I pray for them and all the people effected in Japan :( [-o<

I just saw they are evacuating people close the Japans nuclear plant because the cooling system has failed, they said the radiation level inside the plant is 1000x that of normal. Man i really feel for all those people. I can't fathom going through an event like that.

Talking with many geologists and they seem to think any quake in North America wouldn't get over 8.2.  Not enough energy in the subduction zones.  And it wouldn't even be the San Andreas, it would be in the Cascadia subduction zone (fault) that runs from British Columbia down to extreme northern California.

Hmmm seem like you had one already in  North America in 1964 of 9.2

While the 1811 & 1812 New Madrid quakes reached 8.1 I would not bet against them hitting a higher magnitude like 8.5.  Maybe it's not likely but it is well withing possibility.  And, it would probably be very destructive considering the population of the area.

Friday's earthquake caused a rupture 186 miles long and 93 miles wide in the sea floor 80 miles off the eastern coast of Japan.

The earth's axis has reportedly shifted 10 inches as a result of the earthquake. The force was so strong that it moved the island of Honshu 8 feet to the east, USGS geophysicist Ken Hundnut said.

The earthquake sped up the Earth's rotation by 1.6 microseconds, according to NASA. A microsecond is one-millionth of a second.

I'd give the link to where I found it, (A St. Louis paper) but I don't want you to hate me for leading you into pop-up purgatory.

That was Alaska

 8-)

And to answer more directly, I'm quoting what a geologist said about near future quakes.  When an 8.9 qualifies as the fifth biggest ever recorded, then the 9.2 becomes even more of an anamoly, in my opinion.

I'll take the opinion of a Professor of Geology over that of a hunter of scalps.  Thank you.

Not getting baited. You threatened to leave once before evidently at my hand. I didn't say anything when you returned. I'm just passing what I've seen on the media.

Oh, and by the way...it's 'ignorance'.
