NAV vs. McAffee virus
« on: May 23, 2008, 07:46:21 PM »
Just curious,
I'd like to know if Mcaffee is better then NAV (Norton Anti-Virus). My PC seems to run slow with it on. I am thinking about switching if there is an overwhelming response in favor of Mcaffee.....

I gave up on both NAV and McAfee and went to Eset.  My computers are running faster without weird errors about the common client or such nonsense.  :D

Myself I use McAffee because I get it for free from Comcast. So far I'm happy with it. I have used Norton in the past but it seems they want to completely take over your pc while McAffee seems to focus more on virus protection.
Just my 2 cents.

About 2 months ago I finally switched to AVG Free after so many other forum members recommended it (as did a computer tech when my laptop crashed). I had used NAV or McAffee up to a couple years ago, but it took a looong time to run their virus scans. Presently I have PCcilin on my desktop, and it seems to do well, but I think I'll put AVG Free on it after PCcilin expires.

Oh, along with AVG Free I also run CCleaner and Spybot regularly.

Lots of people complaining about AVG version 8 (version 7 support ending on May 31)--if you haven't already, you'll be getting a reminder to load the new version.

I loaded v.8 on one computer, and it would never update 2 of the modules, the interface was a pain, and I finally uninstalled in favor of Avast... jury is out on that--can't seem to get it to leave the computer alone on bootup.

Most comments out in the web world are slamming v.8 for being really bloated and much slower.

YMMV... (I've been using AVG for several years now)

I loaded AVG 8.0 (Free) two or three weeks ago and have noticed no problems at all.

NAV and McAfee both suck.

AVG free is a good product for the price and is the best of the free solutions out there in my opinion. It has some short comings though (update frequency, lack of tech support, etc) and I only recommend it to folks who aren't willing to pay for security. It's biggest advantage, besides the price, it that it's very lightweight so there's very little impact to machine performance. I don't particularly like their pay product though.

My opinion on the best AV software varies year to year. I evaluate all the products every year and this year's winner from my testing and experience in installing it is Kaspersky. It's what I use in my own network.

It has a 30 day, fully functional free trial so you can try before you buy.

Apparently due to the volume of complaints about the new AVG version 8.0, the lifespan for version 7.5 has been extended until the end of 2008...

So for, Avast is working fine on my Vista PC...

I use AVG Internet Security 8. I had a small issue with my network so I emailed there tech support and a day later they sent me an email back they told me what to do and it worked like a champ. I do not see a slow down at all. There customer support is pretty good if you have any issues. Just my dealings with AVG. My wife has been running AVG free for over 5 years and not a single virus has effected her computer.

Might also want to look into ClamWin: http://www.clamwin.com/ We started using it at work when the NAV license on the server ran out. Never had a problem in the last year. Probably just jinxed myself now.

Would you elaborate on "version 8.0 on my Vista PC sucked?  Also some links as to where you find all of the other complaints about AVG?

I have been running AVG since they started with the A.  Never had a prob.  Right now I am running AVG 8.0.100 on three putters, one is Vista, one is XP pro. and the other is XP pro.  All three are undergoing a scan at the moment and working just fine.

I would like to read some of the complaints.

Thanks,
Bill.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> :-)

Just do a Google search of "AVG version 8 problems", or something to that effect... I can't remember exactly where I started to read of people having problems...

You could also go to the AVG forums, where they announced the extension of the support deadline...

If you don't want the link scanner in the browser (which does slow it down), you have to install AVG from a command line prompt with switches to disable that portion (I found this gem from someone else that posted it was buried in an FAQ somewhere).

All I know is that prior to version 8, AVG was largely transparent, after installing ver. 8, it was getting in the way--so I went with Avast as a test, and it seems to be working fine.

At the university we run McAfee 8.5i but not in full mode which would enable port blocking causing problems with some of our apps. I bought 8.5 for home and have not had a problem. I have encountered machines running NAV which were dogs until I removed it. I am kind of leery of the free stuff. However, I have a friend that is running McAfee 7 and AVG and each of them missed a virus the other caught. Problem is the load the machine was a bit high.

From my experience, McAffee more faster than NAV.

McAfee is less of a load on the CPU. I've never had great luck with Symantec anti-virus products. I've had much better luck with McAfee and I've used both on the networks I use to manage.

I use NAV.  A CPU pig but works well.  Had AVG on the Netbook for a while but I took it off since the netbook only sends weather data.

NAV 2009 Gaming edition here.
The smallest footprint of any AV. Idle scans only so you never notice. And with one click of the button, off........

Where I work we use McAfee 8.5i. Its ok until the scanner kicks off. Even when its set at the lowest resource setting, it bogs down everything!!!

Avg free 8 absolutely is worthless. I noticed there is a version 9 out there now.

I am running the AVG 9.  It runs well, no slow down, like Mcafee and NAV.  I support about 30 PCs here at work, and found those 2 programs useless and very bothersome.  I would get 3 or 4 "support calls" a day on them.   A number of "my" people who have lost internet connectivity and usefulness because of Mcafee and NAV, nag screens and their general "trouble makers".
