Android app "wX" ( FREE/OSS ) - advanced weather app ( US )
« on: February 24, 2016, 06:05:15 PM »
I've created an android app ( free, open-source, no ads ) that you might find useful but unfortunately it's a little hard to find on google play. Please find the URL below and the description info as shown on google play. Questions / requests - please email me. Josh

http://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=joshuatee.wx&hl=en

-------

wX is a free and Open Source ( GNU GPL3 ) Android application that is geared towards storm chasers, meteorologists, and weather enthusiasts but can be used by anyone with ease.

- Current forecast, 7 day conditions, sounding data for an unlimited number of locations from NWS.
- Customizable home screen
- OpenGL based Nexrad radar interface with optional overlays for polygon warnings, Watches, MCDs, and MPDs, storm tracks, estimated hail markers, and TVS. Level 2 in the lowest tilt for base reflectivity/velocity is also available.
- Optimized text product viewer for easy access to AFD,HWO and others from any NWS WFO.
- Vis/IR/WV/Radar mosaic viewer ( with animations ).
- Widgets ( nexrad radar, radar mosaic, vis, afd/hwo )
- SPC products ( such as Watches/MCDs/Convective Outlooks/Mesoanalysis/Storm reports with archived radar )
- WPC products
- Weather models
- Text to speech including an offline "PlayList" functionality. Additionally numerous weather related acronyms commonly used by the NWS are translated for optimal Android TTS experience.
- Voice recognition on main screen for access to common functions.
- NHC products
- Material Design theme including support for Android 4.2-4.4.
- Easy access to twitter state weather tags such as #okwx.
- Configurable including multiple color themes.
- Help is available from the main menu and by tapping on any text in the settings activities.

Notifications:
- Local alerts
- MCDs impacting your location
- MPDs impacting your location
- Convective outlooks for your location
- US MCD/Watches
- US tornadoes
- US MCD
- US MPD
- NHC Atlantic and EPAC advisories

Requirements: Android 4.2 or higher with 1GB of memory at a minimum ( recommended ). ARM 32bit based hardware.
Access required: App needs access to Your Location, Network Communication, Systems tools ( run at start-up for alerts ).

Suggestions / bug reports always welcomed.

If I understand it correctly this is just showing weather info from some external source - which is not bad, just that there are maybe thousnad apps like that. Either way it looks nice, I cannot install it because I dont have any smartphone or tablet, but just by looking at the screenshot it looks nice, I like the design :)

Thanks !

I think this app is different from the average in a few regards:
- the scope of weather information is far greater then the average android weather app covering US
- i try to use the latest android UI design patterns as much as possible
- its opensource w/o cost and w/o ads
- nexrad radar interface is similar to the other high-end US android radar apps with direct download of binary data, decode, and render with OpenGL

Thats what I like - I also like Material design and used it in my template. If I had some device where I could use it I would give it a try, though it probably would be useless to me as Im not from the US :D

Well then it is just another generic weather file reader/display.  Too bad - looks great.

This looks like something I've been looking for.
Long day at work so not going to do too much with it tonight but it looks good.
Just curious how long the radar animations are.
I know the NWS keep about a days worth of data that you can access.
If there was an option for say a 12-24 hour loop would that be doable?

Let me give this a try. Currently in the submenu you can select up to a 36 frame animation but I could take it up to 250 if there were no device resource constraints. I'll get back to you. Thanks for the suggestion.
