TWC to Name Blizzards
« on: October 02, 2012, 07:09:39 AM »
The Weather Channel for some reason is now in charge of naming blizzards.  I don't know how they got that privilege.  I'll bet some of the other weather outfits are going to raise sand about this.  And I'm not sure if the public shouldn't be raising sand about it, too.

Story here.

How about this for a concept....report the weather!  Had a tornado watch/warning in my area a few weeks ago, and got to watch "Pyros" instead of up to date information about the tornadic threat to my area..

And naming blizzards is absurd. Maybe categorize them as they do Hurricanes...but no need to name them.
Thanks,

Chris

When a bad snow storm would hit my area I used to give them my own names but I don't think I can repeat any on here. :-x

Just leave it as names as the blizzard of 78. Naming them is absurd.

There is a "weather" site in southern California that presents themselves as a "weather authority" that names individual storms.

As I read the article, it seems like something they've just decided to do on their own.  Like running movies instead of weather.  They haven't really been anointed by anyone in any position of authority.

The NWS Buffalo has named Lake Effect Storms for quite a few years.
I remember the Beefalo storm quite well.

Don't be surprised if they put a trademark or copyright on them to protect the idea.

Locally I can see that because those lake effect snows are ridiculous.
But we all know about the Blizzard of 78 and the Superstorm  of 93. Any thing else is usually a local event that most people don't even know happened.

This whole naming thing is getting a lot of negative attention across the weather blogs and Twitter. Our local outspoken weather guy has been linking blogs all afternoon, and naming weather fronts, fog, etc.

It looks like we will have severe drizzle Debbie here in Avon later this evening. :)

I tuned in to TWC afor a few minutes before work this afternoon and they were really showing a lot of positive tweets.  Of course they wouldn't show negative ones.

They are forecasting "stupid fog" here tomorrow in lieu of the usual "dense fog".

An article on Accuweather.com has some interesting comments.

The Weather Channel announced Tuesday that they planned to start naming winter storms, similar to how the National Weather Service names tropical systems. Why?

I think this is just another way to make some $$$ as mentioned above and to continue ruining the old weather channel we used to actually like...I can see it now:

"The DQ Blizzard"
"The Chevy Avalanche"
"The McFlurry"

Quote
But shortly after The Weather Channel trotted out the Athena name this morning, the National Weather Service office in Bohemia, N.Y., circulated an internal direction to staff not to use that term.

"TWC has named the nor'easter Athena," said the memo, which a weather service spokeswoman confirmed. "The NWS does not use name winter storms in our products. Please refrain from using the term Athena in any of our products."

That position is in line with a public statement the National Weather Service issued at the time The Weather Channel first announced the naming plan, a statement the weather service sent again today.

"The National Weather Service has no opinion about private weather enterprise products and services," the statement said. "A winter storm's impact can vary from one location to another, and storms can weaken and redevelop, making it difficult to define where one ends and another begins. While the National Weather Service does not name winter storms, we do rate major winter storms after the fact."

That's what boggled my mind when I herd about Athena. Naming winter storms? C'mon man. Lame.
Now I see Brutus, this is getting really weird.
Thanks.
