Congrats Chuck on your web cam system.  Looking great.  I too am using JW Player for my time lapse.  Seems to be working well for many of us.

Just inquisitive as to your refurb cost from Axis when you had yours done?

The camera that I have going seem to have various colors of very small spots that is only visible during the low light time.  I see those spots with others also.  Wonder if there might be an issue for my camera??? It not that annoying as it is not seen during the daylight hours.

Here is my link to my camera page http://dwayneyamato.com/wx/wxskycam.php.

Stan are you talking about the red and blue dots at night?

Yes, those are the guys. What causes this? Junk on the lens?

I think it might be the reflection off the glass of the enclosure from the DC Iris lense but I could be wrong. I'm thinking about calling Axis and asking what it could be.

I may be wrong, but I think that if they are small points of light, that the spots that you speak of are "hot pixels" and noise.  Not uncommon at all in digital cameras and usually show up in low light situations and when cameras "get hot".  A regular digital photo camera's sensor when ran continuously for time exposures and time lapse will heat up and increase this problem.  I don't know for sure but IP and USB webcams/security cams I would think are designed to somewhat reduce this problem.  The sensors with fewer hot pixels are usually also more $$. :)  But, nothing is really "wrong" with the camera, just the limitations of the sensors.

Hi,

Thanks Ed for the "hot pixels" issue.

Ryan, were you able to contact Axis and see why we have those dots?

Chuck, interesting Northern Lights.  Wonder if the sun spots are active?  We should be at sun spot maxima about now but the activity has been kinda low. Need those sun spots for my ham radio propagation.

Stan,

I signed up on the Axis site and sent in what was wrong with my cam. They replied to me and they told me to send them some files and then I called them and they tried to help me out before I sent in my camera. There customer service was very good. The cost of the refurb was $227. It was called an out of warranty fix or something like that. For some reason they are unable to fix your camera the will send you another 211 refurbed if need be. That was my experience.

Chuck

I contacted Axis to see if they would refurb my 211 and they said it's too old.

I assume there is a cutoff date. If they told me they would not refurb mine I would have bought a new camera

Edited....

Is yours a 211W?  Those can still be refurbished. Your MAC address is the serial number and they use it to determine its age.

What drove me to look into it was the quality of your image verses mine and that my POE no longer works.... http://joesweather.info/cams/cam3.html

Get Loggies on close out. Put 'em on the shelf. Diopters are reusable, unless you epoxied 'em. One day one of mine may fail. I'm backed up.  Lot's less than what you guys are quoting for Axis rebuilds...

Well I'm happy with my axis. Probably get one set up as a bird cam when I move to Colorado Springs running on the new WX PC I'm going to build.

Hey Ryan,

Did you have a chance to call Axis about those colored dots?  Just wondering if it is an issue down the line.  Images looks good during the day light hours.  Dots are there only in low light conditions.

Just got off the phone with them actually. He said its noise at night. There is no way to fix this. To be honest I don't see it every night on mine.

Watch it and see if the noise problem is more noticeable in warm/hot weather.  Normally, hotter the camera the more noise.
