My Davis surprise today
« on: November 30, 2017, 06:59:24 PM »
The anemometer bearings were starting to fail after 3 1/2 years of heavy wind use. Below about 5 mph anemometer would stop so replaced today and to my surprise the solar aspirating fan had also failed. The area is so windy I didn't notice when comparing temperatures to the station in town.

Anyway all is well ordered another anemometer from SI today for backup. Already had a spare fan on hand. My 8" diameter rainwise is tucked in behind blocks so out of image.

From that (beautiful) view it looks like it's literally out in the middle of nowhere. How do you keep animals/vandals away?

It is but 80 acres of private property fenced in.
Just a couple horses but they don't bother it unlike the cows. Cows I would need to fence around it they love to use poles as scratching post.

Must not be TOO windy there, as I don't see any guy-wires for support, just the cinder-blocks around a folding-tripod base.

Its windy enough .
Actually it's a very robust mount with minimum 6 full size blocks I've added extra's. So far it's handled around 70 mph wind.

Very quite here for the most part. This is big cattle country so the big thing around here is the weekly auction at sale barn.

This is yesterday's wind graph, most likely gusted to 50+ in the 46 mph area. Airport reported 53 and in town station 48 mph. You can see where it would go from 15-20 down to 0mph in blocks.

Dont feel bad, my speed died only a few months in lol well, i say died, its still going but every now and then it will stop in very light
winds and the OS will still be going, but then, it can be vice versa, so even though Davis sent a replacement, i am yet to fit it, theres
a fair bit of hassle bringing it all down what with the guy lines and all, rest assured, it will totally give up in the thick of winter, you
wait and see.....
Kind regards
Bashy

That looks like the perfect patch of land for a weather station, hands down. No obstacles at all. Glad you found out you needed a new fan. Even in the windiest places, I'd take solice knowing I had a good fan going.

Glad I found fan down too. I'm guilty for not checking more often it's only a few miles and short walk.

This time of year sun angle is so low at 43° Latitude so nothing obvious but I did just finish my monthly summary on both stations and the station failed fan did end up (+1.3F) warmer than in town station.

It looks like a very peaceful place, nice.

The view reminds me of the low rising buttes that sometimes mark the plains of northwestern Oklahoma.

From Google Earth summer view 2 years ago. The brown area below fish hatchery was the new 9 hole golf course under construction called Frederick Peak at end of property line.
