Howdy everybody!  Ghost from the past here...  ;)  I hope everybody is doing well!!!

I'm thinking of setting a camera up over my garden.  I'm thinking of shooting from the northwest corner of it which would show the weather station plus the weather towards Luverne and Rutledge...our closest towns.  I'll need a wireless one that is weatherproof and one with a decent night vision (deer and other critters).  A nice HD image is desired or at least a very clear SD image.  FTP'able...I'm still using WebcamXP so that tells you how "cuttin'edge" I am.    Nothing too expensive...$100-max, preferably less-than-$80 range.  The camera will be approximately 200 feet from the router and there is pretty much a clear LOS path between them.  I'm figuring on powering the camera off of a 12v marine battery that I'm powering my electric fence with...I don't think(?) a camera would be too much of a drain on the battery and looking at different ones it appears many use a 12v power-supply.  I'm planning on eventually installing a pv panel. charge controller, and maybe an inverter, but for now it will be running straight off the battery that is recharged roughly once a month.

So, anybody got some thoughts or suggestions for me?
Thanks!!!
Ed

Thanks, droiddk, but I don't think that'll work for me.  Hmm, maybe I don't know what I'm looking for or I'm having trouble stating what I'm looking for...I'll try again...  :-)

Wireless Wi-Fi, under $100, 12v power, good image, ~200-foot range...???

Hi

Wi-Fi can be unstable, depends on location, I would not go for Wi-Fi.
$100 is not much, that is not possible where I live (Denmark).

$100 is a lot to me...maybe not to you, but it is to me.

I think it was just a lost in translation is all

The way i read it was, $100 is not a lot for a wifi camera

$100 is a lot to me...maybe not to you, but it is to me.
Kind regards

My translation is , not going to get much of a WiFi camera that will meet those specs for $100, let alone $80

Using some Sub $60.00 Aud ones here.

No FTP, which you require, but they still do the job.

I've used WebCamXP too, but agree it's....
Currently run my cameras thru iSpyConnect, which does the job just fine.

Currently I have 6 cameras on a $300 dollar budget, which suits me just fine.

Other priorities dictate how the money is spent.

Cheers.

I was thinking about buying one of these generic IP cameras, it would cost me more or less $70 (USD). But I'm not sure if it has the ftp option to be able to upload pictures to WU.

Exactly.
But still, good image quality and $100, not possible.

Agree. One may find something on Ebay but often the colours looks weird and with a blurry image.

Quoted from my original post..."A nice HD image is desired or at least a very clear SD image."

I'm not looking for quality equal to that of my Canon 6D, but something fairly decent to show the current weather conditions and cover the garden.   Color-cast and focus issues can be a problem with cheap cameras *and* more expensive cameras...but the more expensive ones are usually better, no arguments with that.

Thanks for the feedback, everybody.  I'll keep browsing around and see what I come up with.

Aliexpress.com and DX.com have some really cheap cameras.  But you kinda get what you pay for.

You can always get a Dlink Wifi Camera and build yourself an enclosure for it. Mine were outside for 4 years in a wood box
I had made for them before I got the Hikvisions.

There are some battery powered cameras out these days, but you're over $100...I think around $170+. I know Ring has a stick up cam with an optional solar panel. You're probably over the $200 mark at that point though.

Elitism is why I try to stay off these camera threads.  Not everybody cares about movie studio quality cameras.

The problem I see is trying to use it off a battery.  They use more power than you might think and I've never had much luck running them off batteries.  They just don't last long.  And you have another draw on yours.  How are you charging that battery?

I had thought about getting something like a Dlink or maybe another Logitech and doing the Hubble Fix to it.  But, then I realized that I'd need a wireless camera and one I could tie into the existing fence charger battery...if they run off of a 12v plug-in power supply...SHAZAM! cut the cable off the power supply and connect it to the battery.   Seems most of the cameras run from 4 to 8 watts...which would be from .33A to around .66A....a noticeable current.  I feel that the heaviest draw is probably during the night when the IR is working....I'm no electrical genius, though, so maybe not.  Anyhow, it would work better if I had the pv panel and controller set up...something to work towards.

Phil, nice looking images!  Keep us posted on their life...

Tony, I just take the fence charger off-line and charge the 24DCM on a regular battery charger...usually at the first of each month.

And, I gotta remind myself sometimes that this is a hobby, not NASA.

All my Webcams (Logitech, Dlink, TP) are 5v.  Sorry.  Pretty easy to step down to 5v though from 12v.  http://www.ebay.com/bhp/12v-to-5v  Oh yeah - the best Dlink I have (HD etc.) is 2a draw.

Fence charger battery will then be needing a solar panel

Bushman, I haven't checked on the voltage for the webcams...thanks for the head'sup.  From what I'm seeing on the WiFi security cameras that I've looked at they are 12v.  2a draw...heavy.

I checked the Blink XT out, but it appears to be a motion-activated camera.  I'm not sure how it would work for a constantly recording camera or if it would.  Interesting concept.

I've seen (and used) both 12V and 5V models.  I guess it depends on their intended use.  Just one more detail to watch for while shopping.  5V models probably draw less current.
