Circuit Geeks - Photocells and IR, etc.
« on: July 01, 2017, 08:20:47 AM »
Got a few of these 12V PhotoRelay boards:

They work good for a couple of bucks, adjustable sensitivity and all.  The photocell reacts well to white and red LED light, not quite as good to blue LEDs.  Should it react to an IR LED?  I want to use it as a source/sensor pair to detect when an object blocks the light from the sensor.  Either of the methods below will work for what I need and the distance would be less than a foot over all.

This is another option I have, but I'm not sure if IR reflects off a black surface.  In this example, I would only want the sensor to activate the relay if an object was present.

If the sensor works well with red led's, I would say the receiver is more sensitive towards the red/IR range, instead of the blue/UV side.
I think it will work with IR. But, remember IR moves into the heat spectrum.
