This is very tempting.  I've always been impressed with Jackson Wyoming cameras. Sure this is what they're doing to get such awesome video.

I noticed link on StarDot web page pointing to Amazon. Found it a few dollars cheaper on Amazon with free shipping for Prime members and backed by Amazon. However StarDot is a proven reliable e-commerce site.

FYI California PC has in stock Amazon doesn't, could be a month waiting at Amazon.

I called trying to get more information on camera and the guy I spoke with Anthony, acted like it was a big mystery when I asked him about the camera. What megapixel it was and other basic stuff. I never got a good answer to anything other than this was the only camera that could directly stream to YouTube without 3rd party software. Not sure if this is true but what was said.
I tried to dig deeper on subject and could tell he wasn't interested in giving information out or didn't know.  I'm still not sure what camera this is equivalent too. Somewhere between a 1.6 and 3mp is best guess because of price structure, it’s cheaper than any 3mp even if not on sale.

I will admit this is the answer for those not wanting to run a 24 hour computer plus the big advantage vs streaming directly is how smooth streams look with YouTube handling multiple viewers. All that's required is minimum 4 Mbps upload speed and YouTube handles the rest.

http://stardot.com/netcamlive  Everything but the MPs.  Not sure why they would be secretive about it though.  I would agree with you though.  Likely either the 1.3 or 3.  I guess you could compare the specs.

So Jerry you can seamlessly send to YouTube very nice. I have a 3 and 5 mp SC versions and don't have the ability, wish they did. Was one of the reasons I called yesterday and was told 3rd party software only.

This NetCamLIVE camera on sale seems to be a hybrid of some type. Default is 1080x720p in setup literature so its better than 1.3mp and same as 3mp but priced much lower.

My SC 5 MP StarDot/NetCamSC 1.1.82 firmware doesn't have the Netcamlive ability to add key and stream directly. Would be nice if they would add this ability with firmware update.

Bandwidth calculator for anyone interested in streaming 24/7. Normal HD stream is 720p at 30 fps.

Stardot added outside link to actual camera today for performance preview. 1280x720 30 fps. Looks like they have plenty of bandwidth over 8000 kbps (8 megs) not positive if that's their upload speed but believe so. Not all will have this kind of available upload speed for streaming. Minimum 4 needed.

Hi, I'm the engineer who designed the NetcamLive camera.  Someone pointed out this discussion about sensor size, and in another place bandwidth.  I thought I'd offer to provide more info.

The camera is using a 5MP sensor.   But the image sizes that are available had to be centered around YouTube approved sizes,  and through testing YouTube's reactions to variations.   We also took into account the wide range of conditions in the quality of internet connections throughout the day. For instance, did you know that in large cities there's a severe traffic jam on the internet every morning, when people get to work at the same time and all open their email?  Believe it or not, that camera knows.

So the size of the sensor doesn't really tell you what sizes are available, as it does with security cameras. Whatever size of sensor we might use would have ended up with those sizes, to go along with current YouTube live stream behavior.

The bandwidth it uses is selected for you by that presets pulldown menu.  Always use the presets to start!  A lot of time was put into calculating what works best with the current YouTube system, and some of the things that preset menu does aren't obvious.  Consider that it's not like a security camera, where you just pick what you like and see if the setup will allow it.  YouTube monitors flow over relatively long periods, and the camera needs to comply with their requirements to get the best result.

Default bitrate on some sizes is set to 4000, but it adjusts itself on the fly several times a second according to your connection.  A connection of only 500 can still produce a reasonable view, but in such a case you might need to tinker beyond the presets.  Always remember, lowering the frame rate DOES NOT lower the bit rate.  You have to lower both if you're trying to work on a poor connection.

Note that if you have a poor connection, there's nothing wrong with 360p. It's better than old fashioned TV was. Also, YouTube likes to re-sample the size when they send it out, and often turns 1080p into 360p unless the person viewing knows how to use their settings button.

360p is made from the whole sensor, so pixel for pixel it's actually a sharper image when viewed at that size than you would get from a YouTube re-sample of a larger one.  But the optimum YouTube size at this time is 720p.

Here's a YouTube status page attachment,  showing how people end up seeing our 720p fishtank.  Most are receiving only 360p!

Anyone have nerdy questions about the camera?  Feel free to ask.

I even know some amusing live streaming stories, like how my truck was stolen from our parking lot live YouTube, driven to Barstow, the radio stations were changed to jazz, and it was returned because of the YouTube stream (which had clear pics of the guy in the 4 hours they retained).

Appreciate you wading into the fray, Dan.  So.... can you write us regular Stardot cusomers a script that will turn our Netcam SC 5 MPs into Youtube machines?  :)

I'm afraid not.   The way people do things like this casually,  is to use FFmpeg run from a script. We often hear people say why not just use that?

You can.  We played around with FFmpeg a couple of years ago, and found it unreliable in the long run (it tends to go down).

And so we tweaked the camera head hardware to have an amazingly tight CBR (bit rate control), which anticipates conditions specifically when streaming to YouTube.  It actually watches the slope of the change in throughput and selects a correction based on calculus.  The camera head is capable of more than 80 billion operations a second, so it's the best control over the bit rate.

YouTube even helped us a little to figure out the best streaming,  by answering questions about their monitoring software.

In other words, the most important part is in the camera head hardware.   I spent a month on that!

So since the HW is the same, you are saying you won't update the FW/scripts to do the Youtube thing.  OK - I get it.

Since the camera doesn't have IR, moved anemometer (prop only not hooked up) in front of camera and added solar spotlight for nighttime. It does give something to look at when there isn't any weather.  8-)

I've read 100's of web links to try and get than accomplished. That would be great
but looks like there's a lot of hoops to jump through and lots of 3rd party software you'd need.

I did try the Hiki Streaming Media Software but didnt accomplish streaming to YouTube.

LOL, I decided to move the spotlights after realizing if it was snowing the lights would cover up. So now I have them angled little more so snow won't collect as much. Maybe...

These are the solar lights I'm trying tonight. Last night I tested one on low setting and after charging 3 hours went all night.
