Cat5 USB Extenders
« on: October 29, 2007, 08:42:04 PM »
Now that I've got the web cam bug I have two more spots I'd like to put one. I don't need PTZ and I don't want to spend a bunch of money. A $50 USB cam in an enclosure would be just the ticket, ut I need to go about 40 feet on the shortest run

Anyone using one of the Cat5 USB extenders for a web cam? All the reasonably priced one's are USB 1.1. Cheapest USB 2.0 I've been able to find was in the $600 range. For that I can buy another IP cam. I think USB 1.1 should be sufficient for most usb cams but having no experience with it I thought I'd ask.

Larry, I'm using them. Actually three of them and I've never had a problem. It will even detect the camera when it is connected. This is the cheapest I could find.

And here is the enclosure and mounting bracket I just bought. For the price this thing is built awesome! Dual cable inputs in the rear of the enclosure with waterproof fittings.
