Frazil ice Flow in Yosemite Creek
« on: January 15, 2011, 11:25:28 PM »
I'd never heard of Frazil ice before, but this phenomenon in a stream is quite amazing.  Imagine a stream of Icee/Slurpee/Slushee consistency flowing/stopping/flowing again .. kinda like a lava flow, but very cold.

That is amazing! Great video! It makes me thirsty just watching it go downstream...Never seen it happen here, but now I have something to look for in my creek other than trout 8-)

Excellent video!! I have never heard or seen anything like that before.  I was, as the English say, "gobsmacked" !!  If I ever go to Yosemite I am going to go in the Winter/Spring.  Just beautiful!!!!
    Thanks Ken!!!! =D> =D>

Thats the advantage of living up here where you do see it. Also  some of the streams here actually freeze from the bottom up.  When super cooled water flows it can do some crazy things.
One spot where I use to anchor up when goat hunting and if it was calm  one could watch the ice form on the surface of the inlet.

Is there a formula for figuring out when at a certain velocity of current and temperature, ice will form on a body of water?
