Super-Cap
« on: March 31, 2009, 04:57:15 PM »
Several mponths ago I decided to get a spare supercap.
DigiKey.com just notified me that my backorder has been filled.
If anyone else was thinking of getting one, I guess now would be a good time

589-1002-ND
CAPACITOR ULTRA 10F 2.7V RADIAL
SCHED B: 853222 ECCN: EAR99
LEAD: LEAD FREE ROHS: ROHS COMP

The $3.54 part ended up to be ~$6 with tax and shipping

I know supercaps can fail all of a sudden, but do they lose their ability to hold a charge like a battery does over time?

John, having a career in electronics I can say I've never seen a capacitor change it's value over time except in a complete failure. They're either working as specified or failed completely.

Should be as simple an unsoldering and resoldering two leads.

Thanks,

Is this something we all should have in reserve?

Just how common is the failure?

My station is a little over 6 months old, but brother-in-law has similar station and it's been up since 2004, I think.

He changes the battery annually just for preventive reasons.  Wonder if that helps?

In principle it is, but in practice you need to be very careful in handling the supercap and especially in bending its leads, otherwise the same fault will recur in eg 6-24 months time. This is one of the reasons that the supercaps are now glued to the circuit board.

I've never tried as yet, but I'd imagine that it's fairly easy to slice through the glue with a scalpel or some such fine blade - hobby knife perhaps. But the basic idea is that the supercaps ought to have a life of at least 10 years say, provided they're not subject to mechanical disturbance, vibration etc (hence the glue) and were carefully handled during assembly, which is apparently the prime reason for the supercap problem in early VP2 stations - I'd guess that the machines used for board stuffing, while fine for normal capacitors were just a little too rough on the more delicate supercaps. But since the production process has been progressively tweaked, the supercap problem has become pretty rare.

I had my board replaced last August - I would imagine the new board should be one of the 'better' ones, no?

Could have also just been a bad run of caps from the manufacture too.
