Water Meter Levels
« on: January 23, 2011, 07:03:43 PM »
I have been interested in hydrology for the last couple of years, and I read the river levels in my area all the time. How do the NWS measure rivers? Is it manual or electronic?

Can you buy your own water level measures?

In most locations the NWS makes use of the existing automated gage network operated by the US Geological Survey (USGS) although some locations still rely on manually read gages. Readings from automated gages are relayed via satellite or phone telemetry. Read more about streamgaging in the pdf here.

Most automated streamgage equipment would be far too expensive for the hobbyist although you could buy or make a simple staff gage.
