Thunderstorms are starting to pop up in this extreme heat, due to a cold front in the area.  Hopefully, there won't be any bad downburst situations.  High reached 111 here.  Photo looking north.

Tuesday's 102ºF was the hottest day this year and the tenth hottest day on record in Lexington.
1 8/09/2007 106ºF
2 8/10/2007 105ºF
3 8/22/2007 105ºF
4 8/15/2007 103ºF
5 8/16/2007 103ºF
6 8/04/2006 102ºF
7 8/17/2007 102ºF
8 8/21/2007 102ºF
9 7/23/2010 102ºF
10 8/2/2011 102ºF
Based on data from April 15, 2004 when National Weather Service began recording temperature in Lexington.
I don't know how Lexington kept on going without me.  Until I moved here, there was no official Lexington, Ga. temperature records.  Now the NWS Coop station (mine) records temperatures and rainfall.

Oklahoma City recently went over 50 days of highs of a 100 or better within a year to set an all record in that department as it goes on resetting the record at a daily rate.

100F here in Kennewick, WA... however this is very unusual. Most people think of Washington as wet and cool, but neglect the massive desert sitting just a few hours from Seattle. At the Pasco/Tri-Cities Airport the 'official' temperature has only hit 99F. The old record latest 100 degree day was July 20... but we 'officially' haven't hit 100F yet this year.

114.8°F on 8/25 has been the highest so far this year here at my station.
Hopefully that will be it...but you never know!

It also looks like it will go down as the warmest August on record officially here in Vegas:

Quote
PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT

FOLLOWING A COOL SPRING AS WELL AS A JUNE AND JULY THAT WERE CLOSE
TO NORMAL...AUGUST 2011 HAS TURNED OUT TO BE A HOT ONE. IN FACT
IT APPEARS AUGUST 2011 WILL LIKELY GO DOWN AS THE HOTTEST ON

5 WARMEST AUGUSTS ON RECORD AT EACH OF THE THREE PREVIOUSLY

THE AVERAGE HIGH TEMPERATURE THIS MONTH SO FAR HAS BEEN 3.9

BE THE 4TH WARMEST ON RECORD.

THE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE IN AUGUST 2011 WILL ALSO RANK IN THE TEN

THERE HAVE BEEN 29 DAYS THIS MONTH WITH A HIGH IN THE TRIPLE DIGITS.
THIS IS THE MOST FOR AN AUGUST SINCE 1996 WHEN THERE WERE 29 SUCH
DAYS. THE FORECAST HIGH FOR TODAY SHOULD PUT THE TOTAL NUMBER OF

AUGUST SINCE 1985 WHEN THERE WERE 31 DAYS. AUGUSTS 1937...1944 AND
1952 ALL ALSO HAD 31 DAYS WITH TRIPLE DIGIT HIGHS IN AUGUST.

You set (and will surely hold) my personal record for the year when we passed through Vegas a couple of weeks ago.  108°F when we arrived and 111°F the following day (8/18) according to my RV-PWS.  We stayed at that place you suggested not far from you, so I can probably calibrate to your station.  The A/C couldn't keep the inside temp below 92°F, even though we stuffed pillows in the roof-vents and skylights while we were out.  We abandoned our plans to visit Death Valley the next day based on that performance, and began our final stages toward home the next morning.

Highest temp in Phoenix this year (so far) is 117° (my station recorded 116.6° on that day). Today makes 32 days at or above 110°. That ties the record, and we will probably beat it tomorrow. The excessive heat warning, which has already been extended a number of times, was extended again last night to this coming Friday. That makes it two weeks in length. This is now the hottest August on record for us.

Good grief, if global warming is true, then some soon upcoming summer the TV weathermen in Oklahoma City will end up excitedly telling us how many days the temp in OKC has gone over 110.  It has only done that 3 times this summer at my station.  Since rural OKC has a lot more vegetation around it than Phoenix, like cedars, scrub oaks, other assorted trees along with grass, persistent 110 plus degree weather would really turn up the fire threat.

Well at least the dew point wasn't too bad that day!

I agree with you on cancelling the Death Valley visit.  Probably would not have been very comfortable.  :-)

You guys down in Phoenix always have to be a little bit hotter don't ya John!
It has been a brutal summer though for a lot of the country.

For now, I'll just sit back and enjoy our cool, breezy 104 degree temps and single digit dew points!  What can I say...It's a DRY heat!

How about this for a high temp?

Duluth, MN set a record high temperature of 63258 for Aug 31.

Mean Temperature    31658 °F    61 °F
Max Temperature    63258 °F    71 °F    92 °F (1961)

Wunderground computers took this and posted it as a weather event

Wonder how that temp happened?  I think we have all been outdone.

I believe it's true, and responsible for a lot more than just the heat. Look at all the nonsense that's been going on lately - TX is burning up, earthquake and hurricane on the east coast within a week, another possible storm winding up in the Atlantic, we've got more fires burning again, volcano going nuts in Italy, half the nation is parched and half is flooded, etc. Ain't no fun no mo'...

Yeah - you know how we are down here, Larry...    But I gotta tell ya - it's definitely gotten outta hand.

Very true, and, in many cases, very unfortunate.

I thought last year's 18 days 100 or more was a lot for me - twice as many as any other year in my data. This year has 26 -that includes today.

If you listen in your mind, Al Gore sounds a lot like Forest Gump, and it all starts to make sense...

Quote from: Al Gore
One thin September soon
A floating continent disappears
In midnight sun

Vapors rise as
Fever settles on an acid sea
Neptune's bones dissolve

Snow glides from the mountain
Ice fathers floods for a season
A hard rain comes quickly

Then dirt is parched
Kindling is placed in the forest
For the lightning's celebration

Unknown creatures
Take their leave, unmourned
Horsemen ready their stirrups

Passion seeks heroes and friends
The bell of the city
On the hill is rung

The shepherd cries
The hour of choosing has arrived
Here are your tools

And that's all I've got to say about that.
