User Bandwidth Abuse
« on: March 31, 2007, 11:01:30 AM »
Another question related to bandwidth. I have enabled the auto refresh META tag, set to every 10 minutes to match my data upload frequency. Occasionally, a user will leave the site up for hours at a time, obviously unattended, gobbling up bandwidth. I use my Comcast ISP as my host and can't seem to find any statement of allowed monthly bandwidth in their terms of use. I suspect it may be quite limited as it is "free hosting".  Anyone have an idea what it might be?  Should I be concerned? I have for now deleted the META tag, users will  just have to manually refresh.

Comcast's policy appears to be so vague as to not be able to answer the question...

I would think whereever you look up your usage on Comcast will also show the limit - if any.

Personally, if I were you I'd just put it back and not worry about it. Comcast will contact you if it's an issue.

One nice thing about Ajaxing data.... as long as you're just Ajaxing text data, even updates of 5 seconds uses very little bandwidth.... I consider my website fairly busy... 100+ visitors a day... and my text data represents 1-2 megabytes a day.

It's only when we get into images that bandwidth becomes a major concern.

Unless you are streaming major amounts of video or images, then bandwidth should not be a problem at all.

I have Cox Communications... the last time I checked, my limit was 300 MB a month.

A few images on the home page and it won't take long to gobble that up.  Didn't take me long to find a paid web host...
