WeatherLink 6.03 on Win 10 dies
« on: October 20, 2017, 04:48:17 PM »
Today my WeatherLink on a USB port has developed a failure syndrome. Load it and a few minutes later Windows pops up with "WeatherLink has stopped".

Run the compatibility search on the  shortcut trying all possible iterations, Win 7,8, XP, etc. Reinstalled 6.03, made sure all previous versions are uninstalled. When it is running it does update the data logger and the GUI panel, but get the message that it has stopped.

Win 10 is the latest update (maybe curses) as is my usual practice.

Anyone else experiencing this?

make sure the USB port/Hub you are connected too does not have the Power Management feature enabled.  Disable it (untick) and make your PC run in High Performance mode (ie PC does not sleep)

The root hubs are self powered. Something else is causing W-L to stop.

Also, the computer never sleeps. W-L stops within a few minutes after loading.

What kind of hubs?  What kind of computer?

Is there any helpful information in the WeatherLink log?

Or how about using the Windows Event Viewer to look at the Applications and Services logs?

Are you running any other Weather software, in addition to WeatherLink?

No other weather data logging. The W-L had been running fine until after the latest MS update. At last resort will reset to point before. Meantime, can load W-L, update the data log.

No hardware or software  changes except for MS auto updates.

Might mention that I am fairly experienced having owned, operated a software/hardware company for over 10 years, co-founded a Linux software company and now retired and trying to muddle through MS stuff. Maybe go back to Linux??

I appreciate that information.  So:

If an ms update has caused this issue then uninstall that update.

Best look up the KB numbers that have been installed recently see which once may affect usb, then uninstall it. Try that first.

Was there any driver updates too?

Did not answer the questions since there is no useful information in the logs  and there have been no changes except for MS updates. As per another suggestion, I will see about checking the update and perhaps start with a rollback of any driver updates. This is akin to an intermittent short circuit.

And this is just an annoying manifestation that these stupid machines do from time to time, not a critical  problem.

Thank you for all the suggestions so far. I will in the next few days try to update with any progress.

I have WeatherLink 6.03 running successfully on Win 10. I just ran it prior to posting this. Windows recently updated too.

This is my next task. Probably will rollback any drivers first. May take a while to " 'round2it" , not a critical task. Thanks for affirming my intentions.

If an ms update has caused this issue then uninstall that update.

Best look up the KB numbers that have been installed recently see which once may affect usb, then uninstall it. Try that first.

Are you using USB Express or the Silicon Labs virtual serial port driver...IMO...the later works the best for communicating with your weather station

I would go straight to event viewer and look at the Microsoft error logs for application and system.  I am running 6.0.3 on the latest windows 10 updates with no issues.

Problem apparently solved.

Changes to one of MS's dlls possibly affected W_L's  error checking on a failure to upload data. I have been using Meteobridge for several years in order to bypass my computer. Using W-L only for my data logging locally. Serendipity strikes! Immediately after starting W-L an upload attempted and W-L then immediately stopped. Upon checking the setup found the box enabling uploads was checked. Unchecking the box seems to have solved the mysterious  crash.

No corrupted files or incompatible drivers.

Again, thank you to those who responded in an attempt to assist, but I did only ask if anyone else experienced a problem.  (KISS    )

I would go straight to PhenQ event viewer and look at the Microsoft error logs for application and system.  I am running 6.0.3 on the latest windows 10 updates with no issues.

Hi eyecure, where are the error logs on win 10? I can't seem to find them.

If you click on the search lcon that looks like a magnifier and type event viewer it should come up in the list or you can do the same search with error log and you can also look in the control panel..
