"no station could be found"
« on: March 22, 2011, 09:21:23 PM »
Reinstalled WL and VVP. VVP isn't seeing the station (I think). When I had it running before, it was always COM3. Turned off VVP and tried WL directly with the station on COM3. No dice there either.

Any ideas. I'm stumped.

Let's break it some more! Open hardware device manager and see what's listed under Ports (COM & LPT) If you're using USB, you should see the stock WL driver, CP210x, note what port it's using, and set WL COM connection accordingly.

If you don't see it, click Start/All Programs/Weatherlink/CP210X Serial to USB converter and select USB or  serial, depending what you're using.

VVP needs the N8VB Com driver to work, download and install it from the VVP site.

Good luck, grasshopper.  8-)

Nothing there, but Com1 and Com2!

You know, I never got the window with options to select the "USB Drivers", that was described in the original installation how-to (Rev A 2/1/07). I was following the instructions to move the WL folder to another drive, wiped the computer, moved it back onto the new 'puter at C:, then installed 5.9.2. I did get an error saying it could not find a particular .msi file in the temp folder, so I just tried to run the program and it started. It makes sense that it would, because I installed it before I wiped the whole deal. I was trying to save my data.

Bottom line: the install did not go slick and sweet.

So, if there's an easy way to use the install (which I'm not thrilled about because in the folder are duplicates of many things...some from 5.9.0 and some from 5.9.2), but if there's away to get the cp210 driver in there now, we can do that.

Alternatively, I'm not opposed to going back to the CD (5.9.0), starting from scratch there, then updating to 5.9.2. Fun!

I don't have a USB WeatherLink, so I don't know if this applies or not...

When using USB-serial adapters, Windows assignes the same adapter a different COM # if it's plugged into a different USB port. I figure that's so you can use multiple adapters on one computer and have multiple COM ports.

Have you changed the physical port the WL is plugged into?

We're making some progress. Wiped out the Weatherlink directory. Gone. Kaput. Reinstalled 5.9 from the dvd. Ran the cp210x convertor. The port shows up in the device manager.
Ran Weatherlink. Set the port to com3; sees the station; downloads the data.

Downloaded the n8vb drivers from softwx. Install. No errors. Run virtual vp. set Weatherlink to com6; change it in WL to com 6 too. WL talks to VVP talks to station.

Now onto VWS or Cumulus.

Wanna hear the original problem...and I mean going all the way back to upgrading both the firmware and the WL software?

When I reset the station sometime after changing the batteries, I unhooked the station from the wall. I have the power cord and the little USB connection coming out of a hole in the sheetrock where it leads down to the basement. I didn't want that usb connection to come unplugged by the weight of the cable, so I taped the connection with electrical tape.

But the cable is barely long enough to give me just enough slack out of the hole to drop the top of the station forward keeping the bottom close to the wall.

I must have pulled apart the USB connector, STRETCHING THE ELECTRICAL TAPE, not knowing I unplugged the stupid thing! ARGH and a half!

So now it looks like I'm back to WL 5.9; I don't have the heart at the moment to go for 5.9.2 again. I gotta get my station back on Wunderground, so that's my next mission.

Excellent! Glad you're back in business. Hate it when that happens.

Now on to new adventures, Ready? ...Download and install the BETA of WeatherLink, vers 5.9.2a.

BTW, I have been using 5.9.2a with no issues whatsoever, although I don't use WL to perform any web uploading.  It's too clunky with requiring extension modules to get WU updated and needing other "helper" programs. I do, however, love the graphing features, so that's why I keep two copies running all the time on two different computers via VVP.

I let Cumulus do all my heavy-lifting, it's one solid, reliable resource. I've got no axe to grind, I'm just a very happy Cumulus (AND VVP) user.

Never bothered with VWS; Took a chance on Cumulus and like, 4 minutes after making that decision, it's installed, configured, and up on Wunderground!

Sweet! That's what I'm talking about!

Funny you should ask. I enabled that in the config screen, but it's not working. I'm DW4326. Not much to mess with in that screen unless I need to do something in the "files" area. The Help isn't much help, lol.

The Cumulus CWOP server settings that I have:
The server password, -1 vers is a stock one, for all of us that are NOT ham's.

The only thing I had different was that my server password was the default ("-1"), not yours ("-1 vers").

I changed it to yours, but still no dice. There's not much else to change. I dont get it. Perhaps someone familiar with how and to which server VWS sends CWOP data could weigh in on the differences between VWS and Cumulus.

Or how about a firewall thing? ports?
This is what I'm looking at: http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/wxpage.cgi?call=DW4326&last=12

This should work, it seems.

Got it!
In my rush to get Cumulus up and running, I neglected to put my Lat and Long in the "Station Config" section! I think CWOP uses that as a check to make sure it's getting data from somewhere else.

All good now!
Thanks!

OK! your Cumulus kung-foo is very strong!
The only thing I would change is your CWOP upload interval, reset it to no less than 5 minutes, even 10 minute intervals are more than sufficient.

Done! I don't want to mush this thread up (the subject of which has been resolved) with endless cumulus questions, so check out my additional Q's to you over at Sandaysoft.
