Changing the location of my WS-2902a and adding a WS-2000
« on: March 15, 2019, 04:57:47 PM »
Greetings all.

Looking for a couple of helpful tidbits here.

Currently I have a WS-2902A  set up on a tripod on the roof. I just purchased the WS-2000 and while I wait for delivery I do have a few comments and questions.
1-Now if I understand this right, I could just use the WS-2902 sensor array on my roof with the console from the WS-2000. This would save me the climb up on the roof.

2-Now, I want to set up the WS-2902a console with the new array from the WS-2000 at my seasonal campsite.

Both the above 1 and 2 should be possible, right.

Now the questions:

The new WS 2000 console will be used at home. I'm going to want to set-up both units to WU , Ambient Weather and possibly a few others.
Whats the best way to go about changing these account locations. Do I have to get a new station ID at home or can I just change consoles with the old ID.??

The same question will go for out at the campground with the WS-2902 console that carries my ID now.

Sooo, what's the best way to go about this swithing units and locations.

Sorry for being long winded here, but I think it matters.
Thanks
Carl

The WS-2000 and the WS-2902A use the exact same outdoor sensor array. You can save yourself the work and keep the one up on the roof. Only reason for changing it out is if you wanted the newer one at home and put the older one at the campsite. You should be getting up there and doing maintenance every 3 months or at least every 6 months anyway. There is bound to be dirt, leaves, spider webs and insects in the rain gauge so this needs maintenance. I've had my unit for only 6 months and I noticed it started to yellow a bit from sun exposure. So your call if you want to replace it.

If you decide to keep the existing sensor array when you power up the WS-2000 display it will automatically pick-up the existing sensor array. There is nothing to do to get the signal. This is why you can't have two of these at the same location. If you are too close to a neighbor, then both of you can't have an Ambient station as there are no channels to configure. They all work on the same frequency and the console picks up whatever it sees. It is a one way RF signal...just like a radio station. The outdoor sensor has no idea how many display consoles are picking up its signal. Which is why you can have as many displays as you want.

As for how to deal with WU, I would recommend creating a new station ID. No need to create a deparate WU user account if you will be the one to manage both locations. WU lets you have numerous Station IDs at different locations. You'll want to factory reset the WS-2902A so that you don't double report to the same WU Station ID. Then you can enter in your existing WU Station ID into the WS-2000 and it will continue off so that you don't lose any history.

Here is how to factor reset the WS-2902A. Basically press Wind and Pressure at the same time for about 5 seconds.

To create the new campsite station ID you simple click on My Weather Stations from the WU Profile drop-down or click on MyPWS link as both take you to the same place. Then at the bottom of the page you'll see the blue button to create a new station labeled, "Add a New PWS."

For WeatherCloud you pretty much do the same thing. Under Devices you'll find the "+ New" at the top right of the page which will allow you to create a new station ID for the campsite.

Thanks galfert!

The WS-2902 pws was new in January mid month. It was backyard set up until mid February, then I cleaned and installed it on the roof.
That's why I'm thinking easy now , will see if I'm feeling the need or up to climb ... Still have a month before the campsite opens so I have time either way.

In the other thread,  you said you ran both units side by side. How did you do that w/o the interference or same signal you speak of?

In the other thread,  you said you ran both units side by side. How did you do that w/o the interference or same signal you speak of?

Running both side by side is done by running just both consoles, not two complete stations. There is only one outdoor sensor array that they share. So they both get the same exact outdoor data simultaneously. This is why you can have as many displays as you want. Have one for every room in your home that you want. They don't even have to be the same model as you can see from using the WS-2902A and WS-2000 consoles at the same time. All of the following models work as extra displays.

  • WS-2000 console
  • WS-2902A console
  • WS-1900 console - looks just like a WS-2902A but doesn't connect to the Internet..perfect cheap second display
  • ObserverIP console

I mentioned the ObserverIP as a console because it is a console ...but it doesn't have a display. But it does have an internal webpage that you can access on your network for Live Data. The ObserverIP is often used to expand reporting capability for use with a Meteobridge.

The one thing that is different when you have more than one console is where they get their barometer data from. You'll want to be sure to keep both WH32B barometric sensor and WS-2902A at the same level so that they get the same Absolute Pressure, you'll still need to calibrate them to match. What I'm saying here is that you don't want a WS-2902A downstairs and a WS-2000 upstairs with its WH32B also upstairs....just leave the WH32 next to the WS-2902A and the WS-2000 will still get the data. Now if you get two WS-2902A or one WS-2902A and one WS-1900 and you plan on putting one upstair and one downstairs you just need to account for elevation differences...meaning your Absolute pressure will be different but then after you calibrate for Relative Pressure then those should match. Meaning your Relative Offset will be different.

Actually I have more than just these two sharing the same outdoor sensory array. I also have two ObserverIP device and I have a GW1000. So I have a total of 5 consoles. So yes technically speaking you can even have consoles from Ecowitt or other Fine Offset manufactures if the frequency matches and if they were designed to work together. So there are other console options....but these other options from other manufactures are a risk because a future firmware upgrade may change compatibility.
