Wunderground issue (Feed)
« on: January 26, 2017, 12:06:42 PM »
Kind answer from Ed (VWS/Ambient). He says he wrote to Wunderground and is waiting for a response. He will keep me updated.

He says he doesn't know if they will update or not VWS. I guess there is hope!

In the meantime, I shut my station off from uploading to Wunderground and I encourage you to do so. I remember them contacting me after a few days my station had not reported. Maybe we'll get in touch faster this way

Sorry I didn't read the other topic.  Confusing. But it ok  and I don't use what was going on in the other topic. WU has had many problems hay it Free the only ben is you can get rid of the Ads.

Here is the answer I got from WU:

We changed the way 3rd parties can access data several years ago. Ambient hasn't switched to that new system because they stopped development on VWS. While it continued to work on the legacy system for several years, that system is no longer active and the forecasts will no longer work properly.

That's one of the things about inactive web products. They can often kinda-sorta run for years after being discontinued, but eventually they'll stop.

Surely it wouldn't be that hard to update the few lines of code it takes to grab the WU data and send out the updated version of VWS.  I'm not a programmer though, maybe I'm missing something.....

He told me he would have to pay for the API. I'm sure he can deal something with WU.

Crap same issues here.  Now I need to shut down the Mesonet and Current conditions.  What is the simplest way to get current weather input to the Website, short of dropping VWS.

I wouldn't count on VWS investing on any API Look does the FTP work well Ed wouldn't invest in the tool kit to fix that. Have you noted that mostly the only time upgrade get done is when someone builds a new weather station.
I'm still like VWS but I mostly only care about the graphic that are on my screen. I still use some files for an old web site that I keep don't know why no one in the world really cares. I like Cumulus but it doesn't scale to the full monitor I'm old and it hard to see the Fonts.
All you weather people would of liked VWS when it was first brought to the back yard people. It was great and a lot of fun being a beta tester and changes were going on daily and Ed. interacted with the 2 or 3 hundred people that were in the email group. You know VWS actually in the early day had it own built in Web Server for displaying web pages ruff on dialup. Its to bad VWS can't be given to Open Source  for some smart people could work on it.

Another Program that need to go Open Source is VVP

But I don't know why they don't fix it People would Pay $$$ for it..

so WU build an API that all other software developers use
and they stop a legacy system after a couple of years, to give software vendors time to switch
but VWS does not want to do that and so WU must continue with a legacy system?

Makes sense... that's what Wunderweenies is about cash, cash...  why should they GAD if VWS users can access the data that VWS (or any other platform) users send?  They'll just scrape the Mesonet Data that a PWS may report to CWOP/MESO anyway, which is what they're doing....
If every PWS user stopped sending to WOO-OOO -- in a short time they'd replace it with numbers like MD5536, "Mesonet D5536, Elsinore KY".. me... and Elsinore is a road shoulder about 4 miles east of me. Needless to say you won't find Frankfort Weather on Woo-ooo... but they'll flash once in awhile that "MD5536 isn't reprting".... ... leeches.

"Except for the data I send somewhere else which they grab." Slime.

I'm "mostly" getting my surrounding city data for my Mesomap in VWS.  But I don't rely on WU for my forecast.  I use a Saratoga script for that.

In the past week after my mesonet data was online, I've noticed my Warnings aren't working.  There have been high wind warnings issued I could see on my Saratoga forecast and WU isn't picking up on it.  But I also went to their actual site and looked for the same warnings and they aren't there either.  So I'm guessing WU's process to fetch those warnings from NWS is down.  And that trickles down to me...

Off again today !!!

I would apply for an API key if I knew how to integrate the data from a .json or xml file into a web page. Any clues on how to do that ?

Message from ED

Greetings,

On January 31, 2017, Weather Underground.com migrated their data center from their offices in San Francisco to Amazon Web Services, so the domain may take some time to redirect.

The firmware did not work properly if you selected a static IP address for the ObserverIP. We will need to fix this in a future update, but the workaround is to:

1. Change the ObserverIP module from static IP to DHCP.
2. Reboot the ObserverIP
3. Reboot your router.

Regards,

Ed

I don't really get what he means by ObserverIP and what my router has to do with it. Can you help ?
