Title: Same Radios That Will Turn Off With End Of Message Tones
Post by: LarsWX on June 30, 2013, 09:34:10 AM
I have been looking to buy another radio and it seems all of them in voice alert mode will sound the siren then play the broadcast for 3-5 minutes before turning off, this is crap!
I currently use a (I hate to admit this) radio shack #12-250 with a home brewed external antenna, this works great.
Any ideas?

Hi LarsWx,

I have this radio and love it: Reecom-R-1630 (http://www.amazon.com/Reecom-R-1630-Weather-Alert-Radio/dp/B003I29YF4/ref=sr_1_3/178-1096511-4547628?ie=UTF8&m=AAQ8W8DVR7PSZ&s=generic&qid=1296349683&sr=1-3)

It sounds the alert tone for 8 seconds, plays the message once, then goes silent. Really nice at 2:00 am.

To me, 8 seconds is too long.  I'd like to see one with that adjustable as well as the volume of the tone.  The one I have (that I turned off because it's annoying) sounds the alert signal full volume no matter how you have the audio volume set.

I have been very happy with my Sangean CL-100.

The "siren" alert is good and loud regardless of the audio volume setting, and it resets itself with the EOM signal.

I have an old (~10 yrs.) MTS "Weather EAR" radio. Still works great.
It mutes the audio after the first of the three end-of-message SAME data bursts.
When the warning message starts, it un-mutes after the first burst and you hear the next two (there are always 3 on, 3 off SAME messages) as well as the 1050Hz tone that the older radios use.

I would assume that the newer model works the same way, but it would be wise to confirm it first.

Here is a link to MTS. They are US-made and of high quality.

.

Problem with the wr300 is it's a crap shoot as to whether or not it will honor the EOM tones. I don't know that it is built in to that model

I had it at one time.

I now have a Reecom 1650 and a Sangean CL100. I like both.

Some radios advertised as "play the broadcast for 3-5 minutes before turning off" actually stop at the EOM, seems to be some miscommunication between the engineers and the people writing the manuals.  #-o

The Reecom radios WILL honor the EOM, and as plus, they keep a log of the warnings received. I love mine.

I'm very happy with my Reecom 1650 which does observe the End Of Message tones. Or, get the Reecom 1630 if you don't need the AM/FM radio feature.
