1080 Cables
« on: May 27, 2014, 07:41:20 PM »
I have the WS-1080 and a squirrel seems to have eaten through the rain gauge cable.  I was able to splice it back together but would like to replace them.  I see that there are only 2 wires and was wondering if a standard telephone wire would work.  Seems logical but thought I'd ask anyway.

I had a soil moisture probe intermittently work and after a while of testing points on the lead, came to the conclusion there was a break somewhere and I didn't want to waste time looking for it. I hoofed up to the hardware store and found a solid two conductor thermostat wire that I could splice , solder and wrap and it seems to be working fine now.

I would want to make sure that the wire is insulated from the weather depending on the wire type that would work for you.  The phone guys tell me that solid core copper wire does the best with low voltage signals.

I hope the squirrel got gas from eating your cable.

Thanks Aardvark.  I may just try a 6 foot phone cable worst case scenario is it doesn't work.
