LaCrosse Station Software Question
« on: October 22, 2015, 08:18:50 PM »
I'm assisting a WeatherBug PWS operator with a LaCrosse PWS2308 station. His primary machine is running Windows 10. I'm having issues installing both the HeavyWeather software that came with his station, as well as WUHU.

What other software apps would work with his station? Would Cumulus work? LaCrosse mentioned Weather Display. Would Weather Display work? Would Ambient VWS work?

Since he's on limited funds, I'd rather find him something free versus something he'd have to pay for, and if he does have to end up paying for a software application, I need to ensure it'll definitely work. I'm also swamped busy right now and don't have a lot of time on my hands to randomly start testing various apps.

Thanks!
Nathan Parker

Here is an old post with similar problem. Not sure if any conclusion was reached, but read post #21 about Cumulus. http://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=3577.0

This unit is supported by Cumulus but
Quote
What weather stations does Cumulus work with?
Davis Vantage Pro (VP), Vantage Pro2 (VP2), and Vue.
Oregon Scientific WM918, WMR918, WMR928, WMR968, WMR88 (see  this FAQ), WMR100, WMR180, WMR200.
Fine Offset - stations which use the Easyweather software such as MyDEL, Nevada, Watson and Fine Offset, with model numbers such as WH1080, WH1081, W8681, 265NC etc.
La Crosse WS2300 range (see  this FAQ). You may have problems with corrupt data if you use a WS23xx with a serial/USB adapter; this combination is therefore not supported.

For a more complete list see the Supported Devices page.

the following free software will work with ws23xx stations:

weewx (http://www.weewx.com/hardware.html)
wview (http://www.wviewweather.com/)

the following non-free software will work with ws23xx stations:

cumulus (http://wiki.sandaysoft.com/index.php?title=FAQ#What_weather_stations_does_Cumulus_work_with.3F)
meteobridge/meteohub (http://www.meteobridge.com/wiki/index.php/Stations)
weather-display (http://www.weather-display.com/supported.php)
wuhu (http://home.comcast.net/~wuhu_software/)

Does all of the software you indicate communicate directly with WS23xx stations, or do (at least) some of the programs require you to be running HeavyWeather to get the data in an accessible form? This would be important to the OP, since his problem is that he can't get HeavyWeather to run.
Vantage Pro 2+ connected to Raspberry Pi running weewx by means of Meteo-Pi - data incorporated in domestic energy production (PV) and use monitoring system.

these communicate directly with the station:

weewx
wview
cumulus
meteobridge/meteohub

i do not know if these work directly or if they require heavyweather:

weatherdisplay
wuhu

the comm protocol for the ws23xx is pretty easy (flaky in practice, but easy to code), so i would be surprised if weatherdisplay or wuhu required heavyweather to do the comms.

I had one of these for a while and could not find a source for the information I would have needed to code the protocol, but it (the station) died, and I now have a Vantage Pro 2/Weatherlink combo, which is relatively easy to talk to.
