Post by: Uksa007 on March 17, 2015, 12:39:03 AM
Hi,

**I have USB and RS232 loggers in stock Ready to ship**

I have been building and selling the data loggers for a while now and have been asked for a picture of the completed logger.

The boards are compatible with the following consoles both the newer "Green Dot Consoles" (FW V3.xx) and older consoles:

The loggers come with 1M of memory to store weather reading if the computer is unavailable, e.g. power outage. Instructions are included, and support via email is available.

They will work with the following software (anything that supports Davis console via Com port):

I can supply both USB and RS232 serial loggers:

USB Version uses genuine FTDI USB chip, includes 2m USB Cable $59.99 USD order here (https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=2P3E5Y7CH6BNW)

I can also supply the following which is great for a low power Cumulus MX installation:
Raspberry Pi 2
8 GB class 10 SD card, preloaded with Raspbian
USB WIFI Dongle (natively supported by Raspbian)
International 2A power supply, (comes with UK, AUS, EU, and US power plugs)

Will you make a custom version that uses a USB plug on the board?  I am thinking that I might want to piggyback a Raspberry Pi onto the back of the console and don't need the extra length.  Thx!

Hi,

I considered using a micro USB Connector, but there isn't room for the male cable in the back of the console.

However I can build them with any cable length you would like.

Regards.

In use for about a month. Mine is attached between a Davis and a Raspberry Pi running Meteohub software. Very happy with this combination. Fast shipping to France and received with 10 days after dispatch. Can recommend this as a worthful alternative/substitue for the original,

I am currently utilizing an older serial data DIY cable today for my console  / Cumulus software.

It's worked fine now for a few years.  It is kind of a kludgy connection as I put the RS-232 data on a Quatech serial server and the software is running on a Windows server 3 floors down.  Just really too much stuff here and I am looking to streamline a bit.

Looking to move the Cumulus / Wintel box stuff over to Cumulus MX / RPi2.

I want to mount the RPi2 (velcro?) to the back of the Davis console.

Curiousity question as I am in to time here and utilize a GPS/PPS configuration with my PFSense firewall.

I have also installed the PiFace RTC clock in the RPi2.  How does the Davis console get its time?  I know I have to input the time on the device when I first boot it up.

Should I just leave comments while paying or write to you before ordering your data logger?

I am also writing about the RPi2 / Davis Console / Clock thing / your data logger DIY on an Automation forum and would like to post the parts list including your information with your permission if possible?

Hi,

The console time is set at startup and then can be set by Cumulus (windows) not sure if the Pi version supports time setting, check with Cumulus support forum.

Best to leave any comments specific to you order by using the "Add special instructions to the seller" on the order payment page, eg cable length etc.
Happy to answer questions here.

My USB logger uses the FT231x chip info found here including drivers, which you will need to make sure your chosen Pi OS is supported http://www.ftdichip.com/Products/ICs/FT231X.html

Regards.

Thank you Uksa007,

Yup; just ordered it.  No option was provided to leave any instructions.  Well I didn't the option to add comments. It doesn't matter cuz I can shorten the cable myself when the little project is finished.

Well looked at the picture and I would have to melt the hot melt glue to shorten the cable.  I don't want to do that.  Please write to me regarding order.

Noticed too the price went up a touch.  It is still a very good deal.

Cheers,

Pete

Hi,

You need to click the word add beside the add special instructions, which then pops up the box for the comments.

Let me know what length cable you want and I normally glue them to provide strain relief and avoid the wires breaking.

Paypal put up the their costs, I'm not making much as I do it as a hobby.

Let me know how you go, as it would be good to get rid of the PC I have running.

Hello Uksa007,

Yup; shorter would be better.  12 inches (30 cm)  here would probably be a best guess eh?.

I already orderd it.  I guess I can just email you or you can email me via paypal address eh?

Started to write the receipe for my build on the automation forum.  Included you link / picture for purchase.

I have gone to a hub and spoke methodology of my automation in house as I prefer not to utilize the cloud.

Automation is a hobby here and integrate weather watching in to my hobby.

Here also pulling down weather maps from satellite using SD radio as a secondary to pulling down maps from the internet.

Hi,

I have done some testing with my Raspberry Pi 2 and my logger is working great with Cumulus MX.

No drivers were required, just made sure everything was current with Raspbian by doing:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

The only trick was in the Cumulus settings, to set the Davis console com port to /dev/ttyUSB0
I also note that Cumulus MX has the option to set the Davis console time, not yet tested.

Hole this helps.

Great news Uksa007!

Having a look at the Wintel Cumulus last night and there is a check box for time sync to the Davis console.

Never paid much attention but did notice that my console time matched the house time yesterday.

Well too will be using a POE splitter to provide power to the Davis Console combo RPi2.

Thank-you Uksa007.

Received the data logger today.

Great stuff!  Took only 9 days from you to here near Chicago.

Currently testing running Cumulus MX and Cumulus 1 using a tiny serial server and DS1-01.

It has run well for the last few days with DS1-01.

Next trying your data logger cable and probably purchasing a second console.  (another VP2 station is nearby here).

Tested new buffered datalogger.  It works well.

Ordered the serial version of your cable to continue testing with serial server on one console and using the buffered datalogger with another console.

Noticed that the connector is a bit loose such that I had to use a piece of stryrofoam to keep it in place today.

What do you recommend to keep it in place?

I then looked at a picture of the Davis provided data logger and it looks to have some sort of snap in connection pivot thing.

Is there a place to just purchase that little combo plastic piece or a means to make one?

Redid my DIY post/blog using CumulusMX / RPi2 over here.

Actually changing the first one mentioned over to look like this one.

What do you recommend to keep it in place?

Sent you an email with a couple of options, i don't normally have issues with them staying in place.

You could try to adjust the cable angle by heating the glue with a hair dryer.
Use a small piece of blue tak on top of the logger between the edge of the logger and the case of the console.

Let me know how you go.

Is there any interest in a small form factor, low power solution (5W) for viewing and uploading weather data to the internet?

Thinking I could supply a Raspberry Pi 2 with SD card pre loaded with Cumulus MX.
Just plugin the logger and your away.
Cumulus MX runs it's own web server so you can see all your weather info locally and it also has all the usual Cumulus options for uploading wether to the internet eg wunderground.

Let me know if your are interested.

Hi,

I redesigned the board, so that it can be either USB or RS232 when built, and a few other things are different, eg I program the memory in circuit.

Functionally they do the same thing.

I'm not sure how Belfryboy does his, you will need TX, RX and GND for a basic connection.

Here is the DB9 Standard

Thanks for the Positive feed back.

I have a built up a few USB loggers for Christmas stock, figure they would make good Xmas presents to go with weather stations some lucky people might be getting for Christmas.

With Christmas coming most suppliers will be closing down, so get them before they are gone!

See the first post in this thread for detail and how to order.

Hi,

I don't use weewx, so can't offer any help with it, I use Cumulus MX on my raspberry pi.

There is some suggestion there are issues with the current version of weewx and the loop command, see here https://groups.google.com/forum/m/#!topic/weewx-user/PJK8Hr5Xip0

I would suggest that you start with confirming you are able to send and receive data from the logger.
SSH into the raspberry pi and install some terminal software and connect to the logger.
Set the baud rate to 19200 8N1 and send TEST
It should respond with TEST
Send NVER
It should respond with the version of the console firmware.
If it's not responding check the port and driver is loading, using dmesg

Once you have confirmed the logger is communicating, you can continue your trouble shooting with weewx, or install cumulus mx, it just works.

What was the issue, in case someone else encounters similar issues with weewx?

Good idea:

I don't think it was weewx per se...i think when you first connect and turn the machine on you need to let it do it's thing. I was configuring weewx, restarting the weewx service, testing the connection, etc...and I think testing the communication with the console interrupts the modem.

Anyways, it seems like it's been all good for a couple days now.

What is the difference in data storage amongst the different Greenn Dot USB dataloggers of:

Davis 6510

Uksa007

BelfryBoy

Are there any other meaningful differences?

Hi,

They all use the same capacity memory chip, so there is no storage difference.
Functionally there is no difference with my logger.

What is the actual memory amount?

What is the actual memory amount?

It's a AT45DB011D which is 1 Mbit, with the security registers programmed.

New batch of USB Loggers running out the door, get yours now!

Remember I can supply an RS232 version if you have a specific application that requires it, along with the USB 2.0 version!

Hi, would you consider making one with the alarm output? or is that too much?

Hi,

How many do you require?

There would be a lot of work in developing the circuit, PCB, testing etc.
To date your the only one who requested it, so unless there is huge demand I fear it would be wasted effort.

Regards.

I understand, thought there would be a lot involved, no worries and thanks for the reply...

Bad news: The memory chips, that allow the green dot compatibility have gone end of life and are not produced anymore. There is a newer replacement chip, unfortunately it doesn't work with the Davis security used in the firmware/console. It was going to happen sooner or later!

I have purchased the last 33 chips, after that I will have to try to use a different package, long term we are pretty much in trouble.

So if you want a logger order asap before the 33 are gone.

I will update this thread with details as I develope the new logger.

Regards.

Well I just took the plunge as although I my logger works it is a serial one and so have gone for a USB one now as my Weather PC only has USB. My existing logger is a 'Bluewave' one which kinda says how old it is for those in the UK who remember that.

Hi, thank you for the update.  Considering my first Davis purchase as my old station is about at the end of it's life. I'm looking for a solution to run updates to WU/CWOP without running a computer 24/7. If I am correct, I would need the ISS, the weather envoy, and then your product in lieu of weatherlink?

Yes, but note Weatherlink includes a licence to use Davis software.
You really only need an envoy if the Console is not near a PC, It doesn't seem to replace a PC?

Generally you just use the console with the logger connected to a PC or Raspberry Pi running Cumulus or similar software.
The raspberry Pi is a good solution if you don't want to run a PC.

Very interesting in the serial logger.. Is there a way to give it more storage to hold 1 minute intervals for weeks?

Also, I have several Davis consoles - most 1.90 firmware and one 3.80 firmware (green-dot).  Will this logger work in all the consoles?  Just curious.

I already have (2) loggers (both serial - one green-dot and one older 11 year old style) that works with my older 1.90 console.

Looking for serial, flexibility if possible, and adding more storage capacity for holding log information in the event of a power outage.  It would be cool if you could use a USB key for storage.. :)

It's not possible to add more memory, it has been tried and the console still only uses 1M which is supplied on the logger.
You can select 1min intervals, the weather doesn't normally change that fast so not all that useful. I set mine to 5 min which is the same as my update rate to wunderground.

My loggers work on both green dot and older non green dot.

  • Davis Vantage Pro
  • Davis Vantage Pro2
  • Davis Vantage VUE
  • Davis Weather Envoy

Hi there. I realise this thread is pretty old now, but I wondered whether by any chance you're still selling these data loggers? If not, do you know of any alternatives?

I'm trying to help a sailing club work out how they can publish data from their Davis Vantage Vue to WeatherUnderground, WOW, etc, ideally as cheaply as possible. I was hoping to find a way to connect the Vantage Vue to a Raspberry Pi running WeeWx.

I'm not sure what version of the Vantage Vue hardware or firmware they have. Are your data loggers compatible with all versions of hardware and firmware...?

Many thanks, James.

I just had a bricked Envoy repaired and they swapped out my serial logger for a new one. The Envoy runs 3.8 firmware. I can now no longer use it with VVPro. Will your logger plug in and work with VVPro and WD, WL, VWS and other software that can be run from VVPro ?

The issue with VVP not working is with the firmware of the Envoy, not the logger.  I'm not sure what version of Envoy you'd have to downgrade to, but the regular console has to go back to version 1.90.

Everything is working now. I thought VPSE (Virtual Serial Port Emulator) was running on the test computer but it wasn't. I thought Davis tech had upgraded me to a green dot logger but the new serial logger they sent works with VVPro and everything is online. The Envoy's firmware is 3.8 but the logger is a standard serial port adapter. Seems like they listened when I told them I needed to maintain compatibility with VVPro and all my purchased software when I sent my Envoy with the dead barometer to them.
