Boltek PCI card not working using PCI-E to PCI riser.
« on: June 21, 2015, 11:25:48 PM »
Hi All,

I am trying (without success) to run a Storm Tracker PCI card using a PCI-E to PCI riser.

I installed the Riser and then the Storm Tracker card into a new PC running Windows 8.1 64bit.
I then installed the Nexstorm (Windows 64bit) software and driver.

Next I started Nexstorm and it recognized the Storm Tracker card and activated the receiver.

All seemed good until I tested the card with a Lighter and nothing.

I them put the card back in the old PC, PCI slot and it tested OK.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Riser cards can be very problematic, for instance they usually don't work with cards that want to a busmaster. That said, my Bolteck PCI is working with a PCI riser, so it may be an issue with the particular PCI-E riser that you are trying to use. Sad to say, but it may never work, or a different riser might work and the only way to determine that is try another riser.

Thanks for the reply.

I have just got it working???? Now it is registering a non stop noise count of about 4000/min.

Any more thoughts? :-(

Is this with the same riser card? This sort of potential issue is exactly why when I moved my weather software to an ITX system, I went out of my way to get one that still had a PCI slot.

You could try going into the BIOS and try changing the slot detection order, if possible. If another PCI-E slot is available, try that. I just noticed you are using a 64-bit version, have you tried a different Jungo driver version? Do you have a manual for the motherboard and does it say much about BIOS settings? There may be a BIOS setting that will change things, but those are usually poorly documented, at best, and it often takes much research to figure out what they may do.

After moving the card and riser to another PC and getting the same result I have decided to get a new Motherboard with a PCI slot.

There are still plenty around at reasonable prices.

Thanks for you help.

I was unsuccessful to getting a cheap generic pcie to pci conversion card to work, but I WAS SUCCESSFUL in getting a

StarTech.com PCI Express to PCI Adapter Card (PEX1PCI1) to work without any noise.

You can buy it on Amazon for $40

I now have my full weather station working on a Shuttle PC.
