Easy to build waterproof housing ideas
« on: February 22, 2018, 01:15:50 PM »
Given the high technical skill level of WX forum members, the simple Arduino based data logger described in our new paper at  http://www.mdpi.com/1424-8220/18/2/530  is probably not that exciting, however the housings described there are cheap, easy to assemble, and could be re-purposed for other projects no matter what electronics you were putting into them:

The 4" rubber bottom enclosure parts are also available in larger 6" and 8" diameters, so there is room in either build for larger batteries, etc.
There's a tutorial outlining how we pot surface sensors at:
https://thecavepearlproject.org/2015/10/24/diy-arduino-logger-build-instructions-part-3/
and we've been using these loggers for climate stations for quite a while now
https://thecavepearlproject.org/2015/06/15/developing-an-arduino-based-weather-station/

I hope that helps anyone looking for a good waterproof solution, that you can make from parts at the local hardware store.

And a couple of photos of the sensor potting method we use at this imgur album: https://imgur.com/a/Vz0ZH

(Note: pressure & RH sensors must maintain air contact so they are not fully immersed in the epoxy)
