Title: Will a CCTV camera and DVR card work as a weather web cam?
Post by: dtcatTX on April 01, 2010, 06:39:58 PM
Is anyone here able to use a surveillance CCTV camera that feeds video to a DVR card in their computer as their weather cam?   I have a Swann outdoor day/night surveillance cctv camera that connects to a Swann DVR card via BNC cable and can record video to my spare hard drive.  I would love to make this my weather camera and place the image on my web site  http://www.lockhartwx.com/  (website needs to be simplified too).

I have tried Dorgem and Yawcam software but neither can even detect the camera.  All the proper ports are open because the native software that came with the DVR card works.  However, this DVR software cannot place the image on a web page.

I got frustrated with this surveillance camera and card, so I bought a Logitech Pro 9000 a few weeks ago.  More on the Logitech later.   But for now, I am going to sell the Swann camera and card if I can’t make it work, so just checking with y’all before I do…  Thanks for your input.

I have ASTAK 4 channel DVR with my security system. Although I have not used it, the manual has instructions for monitoring on the internet. The DVR has a J45 ethernet outlet. It can be connected to a router then to the PC and on-line by selecting it as your source camera. ASTAK shipped the software disc with the DVR.

Thanks, Wx4U.  I don't want to buy a new surveillance camera.  I can monitor mine on the internet as well, however, to do so, you have to download a special viewer.  And the viewer is not in a browser.

I guess I will just settle with my Logitech 9000 as my weather web cam.  I was really looking forward to having night vision (which the Swann IR camera does have), and not spending an arm and a leg to do so.

Thanks everyone for viewing my question.

This may be a zombie topic, but I have also been searching for a way to use my networked CCTV/DVR as a "webcam".  Articles I have searched online all point to using a webcam as a security camera, but not for going the other way.   :-x

There are camera accessories (https://www.yitechnology.com/) in which you can have the two connected.
