Lightning detector
« on: August 01, 2014, 03:19:05 PM »
Hey all

I have been looking around for a lightning detector, and so far there is System Red from Blitzortung and the Boltek.

Boltek is very expensive
System Red is sold out and no news about when they produce again.

So my question is, does anyone know about other lightning detectors, have experience with other detectors and so on..

Thanks in advance

There's always the AS3935 based modules.
I think there's three or more different variations sold by TAUTIC: https://www.tindie.com/products/TAUTIC/as3935-lightning-sensor-board/, Embedded Adventures: http://www.embeddedadventures.com/as3935_lightning_sensor_module_mod-1016.html, and a few other places I can't think of off the top of my head.

They are not as capable as the Blitzortung or Boltek systems, but they will give you basic Lightning detection and Storm Head distance approximation.

I've got couple of them. It does take a bit of tuning to really get them working well, but once you do get them tuned they work pretty good for what they are. The ones I've got setup seem to be able to detect Lightning out to their advertised range of 40km.

Josh, look promising, but my mind are more less thinking in finished products, and yes, know System Red has to be assembled ;-)

Acurite for $40 bucks or http://skyscanusa.com/products/ for much, much more.  I am thinking about the Acurite since it is so cheap.

Good things coming from Blitzortung, if everybody will be patient!   Hang in there... .

Oh, is there something new coming? if Red is out now and was the latest, couldn't imagine what could be next, any thoughts of just letting the cat out of the bag and we'll have to wait. Is there any info elsewhere on something newer to come to it?  Thanks  :-)

The developers will resume sending station kits not too long from now.  From what I understand, they're doing major work on the network, implementing features, etc.
