Dynamic DNS with VWS
« on: March 08, 2015, 03:51:55 PM »
I am accessing a Davis weather station remotely. If I go into "Communication", I select "Davis Vantage Pro...(TCPIP Interface)". I then enter 22222 as the TCPIP port and the IP address of the remote station.
All works fine unless the IP address of the remote station changes.
The remote station uses DynDNS to register its new IP address, but I am unable to enter the DNS entry  into the IP Address box only the physical IP address.
So, I have to keep an eye on the IP address in DynDNS and if I see it change I update VWS -obviously it would be ideal if this could be automated somehow.
Any ideas welcome - or am I just missing the obvious ?
Many Thanks
Steve

In your router, set up a "static" or "Reserved"  IP address for the MAC ID (address) for the console to whatever the router has currently assigned to the console.  Then it won't change.

Thanks for the info, but I'm sorry I should have been more specific in my explanation. The problem is not the local IP address of the weather station, it is the IP address of the router that changes if the router has to reboot for any reason. The router correctly updates DynDNS with its new internet address, but so far I can only find a way to input the physical IP address into VWS - which would then need to be manually updated.

Have you considered contacting your ISP and asking for a static external IP address? Many will but may require extra fee.
I have to change my camera website scripts every time my router reboots, I'm just living with it for now.

Are you meaning 'modem' instead of router?
If you WAN (Internet Provider) address is 'dynamic' and changes every time the modem goes offline, maybe a DNS forwarding service is your answer... ??????

I tried a dynamic dns service, still have the account but for some reason everything wanted to block it, giving visitors a warning this may be a malicious site.

Yeah, It looks expensive. But 7-8 yrs w/'em... no problem. Period.
You gonna stream cams, access home computers remotely, etc, etc,
and have a dynamic, or even a so-called 'sticky' IP address, something
similar is a must... .
