CWOP quality control
« on: November 20, 2015, 12:29:03 PM »
Since I am new to reporting for CWOP, I am a bit confused as to where do the quality control graphs come from? When you look at my page http://weather.gladstonefamily.net/site/E8194, you see the graphs of my temp and barometer compared to their analysis of what they think it should be. How is this calculated? My barometer was off slightly and I have adjusted that. But my temp is lower than the analysis and that is a problem. I have compared my Davis temp probe to my certified lab-grade mercury thermometer and it is spot on at all ranges. The local METAR is about 8 miles away and is right next to a busy freeway and much asphalt and concrete and is always a few degrees higher than mine which is located inside a Stevenson screen located exactly 5 feet off the ground over short mowed grass in a rural area. Any tips or ideas so I can better understand what is happening?
Thanks!

You will find lots of discussion on this subject throughout this forum. It is a known fact that many so-called "official" weather stations are poorly sited. You'll even find photos taken of these weather instruments located in parking lots with asphalt, buildings and other objects in close proximity to the sensors. Unfortunately, all of this poor siting results in bad data being captured.

You'll also find that in many locations, the barometric readings always show out of tolerance according to MADIS. Mine is an example of that situation. While all of the surrounding barometric readings in my area are stable and follow my reading, the "analysis" readings look like a wild roller-coaster ride. It is very obvious there is no way barometric readings could change so drastically or in such a short period of time. I and many others have simply given-up trying to fight the system on this...  ](*,)

The only thing you've done wrong is concerning yourself.

If you know your data is good, and you seem too, then quit going to that site. All you'll do is give yourself an ulcer, because it damn sure ain't gospel. ;)

If its a bad barometer giving erroneous pressure readings you may be able to contact Madis. Problem is identifying the culprit.  Look at this thread http://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=25614.0
