Update:

I finally got a couple of genuine Olympus C-7AU power supplies off of eBay, and the camera seems to work just fine now. I also got a second camera and it also works fine with the Olympus ps, but not my generic 6 vdc bricks. Apparently these cameras a fairly finicky about the supplied voltage, and/or I just got unlucky with the bricks I had laying around the house. Anyway, my weekend project is to get the cameras online full time after some upgrades to my dedicated 24/7 Weather PC.

Has anyone identified the type of USB port that's on the side of the SP-500UZ ?

I'd like to buy a right angle connector, as I'm sure many have. I looked at it last night and it looks pretty different. Is it proprietary?
I wrote to Olympus but who knows if they will answer.

Thanks

Looks like it's pretty proprietary. Guess finding a right angle connector will be pretty tough

That looks awesome! Great job on getting that in place.

Don't ya hate it when it costs more to ship a thing than it does to buy it?

We use Amazon Prime.... 2nd day free shipping.... I am borderline abusing this program.  It paid for itself in the first month.  They even deliver on Saturdays.

Yep, definitely proprietary (pins on both sides inside of the plug, as opposed to standard USB with just 5 pins on just one side). And yea, I haven't found a right angle version yet - though I found that (carefully) trimming off some of that molded plastic strain relief helps.

Just buy several at one time that way it doesn't hurt so much! I did it that way since I'm installing more than one camera, and it always pays to have spare parts on hand anyway!

Yea, I had to give up my Amazon prime when I moved up here - not applicable to AK or HI.  :-(

I'm just grateful I can still get free "super-saver" shipping! Standard UPS Shipping rates to AK are insane!

So far I am experimenting with my SP-500 on AUTO mode. However in doing what the camera was designed to do in this mode, it tries to take a good picture in the failing light of evening and the result is a distinct blue tint to the picture and noise. I'm thinking of trying another of the available modes.

Which mode are you other SP-500 users using?

I'm doing my experiments with the camera on a tripod looking through the upstairs window, before I move it to it to it's outside location.

Thanks for looking

Just checked mine and it's been set to the playback mode.  Switched it to P and then Auto and it didn't seem to make any difference.

For low light examples look here late evening:  http://www.sebeclake.net/webcamsofmaine.htm

I've been making some progress using the "P" mode, but still got the "blue hue". Tried to bump the white balance toward the red, but just got pink clouds.

Experiments continue......

Does the cam have an 'A/S/M' mode you can try?

Yes it does!
I think the next experiment will be to change the white balance settings using the "what kind of light are you shooting under" adjustment. I have it set for bright sunshine but might try it under the florescent light or one of the others to see what the generic response is.

This is pretty entertaining.

I've had a few of the Olympus cameras now and have never had to play with any settings to get good pics with the VM95 software. The only complaint I had about the Sebectec application was it seemed to take one bad picture for every good one. I tried playing with different software settings but eventually gave up and went back to VM95.

If someone has figured out how to get consistently high quality pics from the Sebectec software I would consider using it again. I do use the timelapse version and it is wonderful.

I'm not having any trouble with the pictures other than the color shift

I had that happen in the evening when it couldn't seem to switch between the sunlight and dusk. Never did figure out any settings that helped.

The SP-500UZ will generally give a good image every time when using sebectec software.  I think Todd is using the C-4000 camera which may not perform as well.

Today I tried switching to the setting for fluorescent lighting and it has toned the blueness down considerably.

Actually I've moved up a bit and have the C-750UZ which has the same specs as the SP500 but costs a lot less. Haven't tried it yet with the latest Sebectec software (something I really need to do).

I'm wondering if there is a way to change the way the SebecTec software displays the date and time.
I'd like a few spaces in between the two and I'd like to drop the seconds off the time.

Anyone know?
