All you neeed is a spot where you can FTP (file transfer) the HTML files that Weatherlink can generate.  You might need a couple of 100 KB for a site incl. photos.  You can always use a free web host (there are zillions out there) or even Google sites for free.

I will send some time tonight looking through the forums to see what I can learn about the data logger and Weather link.

Once the equipment arrives I can contact the computer techs and have them load the software for me.  Thanks.  Mike

The weather station arrived yesterday.   The weatherlink software is installed and we will put all the station components together today and hopefully have the system installed by tomorrow.

I would like to set up a website using the weatherlink templates.   I had looked at weather underground but it appears I may not be able to use their free website hosting because technically a state park is a commercial operation and there is specific legal language in their agreement that prohibits use for commerical operations without written permission.

Short of paying for a domain and hosting is there a place out there where I could create a basic site using the weatherlink software templates and run into a legal problem due to the commercial operation issue?

Im trying to promote weather stations, storm ready program, etc, to all the parks in my area but keep the costs as low as possible.    Thanks for any suggestions you can send my way.  Mike

Well maybe I am misunderstanding the commercial policy of weather underground.

The above link goes to a weather station website that appears to be hosted by weather underground and there is a side link to their local state park.     Mike

I dont think you would fit the "commerical" definition... if you are really worried, you can get a major league baseball type "expressed written consent" by popping them a note.   But I would just sign up and plead ignorance should anything arise.  But I am positive you would be fine.

By commerical they are trying to prevent people reselling the data, or selling stuff on the site.

I think Andrew has hit the nail on the head.  Here is a business (commercial) that has a wunderground site and a website:

There are many, many free webhost sites that will work for you.  If you want a domain name though, you would pay for it (~8 bucks a year).  Some  registrars give free hosting with that.  I would have thought that your gov't would want this online - but then having worked for the gov't I know how long that could take to get approval and webspace!  :)

Our department may want it on-line.  The problem is that I need to articulate to them what I want to do.   If I can give them a basic sample it will help them understand what Im up to.   The webspace may or may not be an issue but if it is seen as a benefit they may go for it.

I have a computer savy park manager that is going to work with me on Saturday to try and put a basic website together.    I did send an e-mail to Weather Underground to explain that I dont want to violate any policies or have a sudden change in career path.

Stay tuned.....Mike

There are lots of parks with live weather.  Some do it as part of the dept. communications plan like this:  http://www.nps.gov/bibe/daily_report.htm , others as benefactors of interested groups like http://www.graysonfriends.org/

Bushman thanks for the links.

Here is a report.   I put together the ISS and I had someone stay inside my office and spin the wind cups while I went outside out to about 900 feet away.   I was still getting a windspeed reading on the console at that distance.   So Im assuming that if the radio signal was not making it to the console I would see a blank screen or dashes.  It looks like I may not need the repeater but there is no foliage on the trees right now.  Time will tell.

One thing strange though is that when I unpackaged everything the transmitter ID keyboard on the ISS the #2 button was slid up into the on position while buttons 1,3,& 4 were in the down position.  I could not seem to pick up any readings on the console like that.  Right now the 4 buttons are slid to the down position.    When I check the console reception the screen reads "Receiving from Station No.1 "   Does it sound like I am on the right track?

Ok thanks for that Bushman.   I have the weather station installed and the console is working great!    Now Im trying to get a website (WL software) placed on Wunderground after I opened the account.

The setup on WL asks for the FTP so do I simply put www.undergound.com as the FTP?

Also do I need to first have the weather data placed on my hard drive and then transfer it to wunderground?

I apologize for the these questions but I am not the most computer literate.  Thanks for any help you can provide.    Mike

Wunderground hosted web site?  I think you might be confusing things.

This is the type of website you can have on WU.  The software just uploads data, and wu handles all the formatting.  So its not ftp, it works in background using http.

signup/setup page
http://www.wunderground.com/wxstation/signup.html

You would use FTP to upload the templates you describe to a free hosting, or paid hosting web provider.

Oh yeah Im confused no doubt there.

I have a password and website on wunderground but I cant figure out how to send the weather data from my computer to wunderground.   I figure that there is somewhere in my WL software setup internet settings section that I need to place the URL for wunderground.

I think this might be the correct URL.    Do I need to place this URL in the "host" box on the internet connections section on my weather link software???    Mike

You need to add this free expansion module from WeatherUnderground to WL: http://wiki.wunderground.com/index.php/PWS_-_WeatherLink  The module handles the upload to your WU account's data page (those aren't web sites at WU).

You use the WL Internet section to upload to your personal or business web sites.

Have you filled in the Wunderground settings under the File menu dropdown?  That should be all you need to do.

You probably won't see any Wunderground data from your station for a day or so.  It takes their servers that long to catch up to changes.

Cant help with weatherlink setup....

Once you have a username on WU, and password, (username is an email address), you need to setup a station.
While "logged into" wunderground, there should be a drop down at the top called "My Quick Menu", drop it down and pick my stations. Then complete the fields to add a station, click submit.  The screen should refresh and list your station ID.  Its different from username, but the password with be the same.  My id is IONUNION1   (i is for international, ON is province/state, UNION is frist few letters of city) .... yours will start with K (i think, then similar naming convention)

now you just need to find the field in WL to enter the station ID, and pass.

Ok thanks for that help.   I think the light bulb ( low wattage ) just went off in my head and I think Im understanding this a bit more.  So the website I built using weatherlink can be placed at a host site such as GoDaddy but not on weather underground.    Wunderground simply receives the WL data and then uses their own template.    I will keep trying.    Thanks for the tips.  Mike

I found the info I needed and it was right in the expansion module that wunderground created for weatherlink.   It was there that I found the fields for entering the station id and password.   Thanks!
