Wind Gauge Question
« on: February 21, 2013, 10:23:12 PM »
I know this is due to the ice/sleet we are getting right now but my wind speed gauge keeps freezing up and i'm afraid that if i unthaw it it'll make matters more worse so atm it's reading 0mph winds weird thing is the wind direction part of it doesn't seem to be frozen as it is moving by itself...7. any ideas??

Are you sure it is frozen? How old is the station? Ambient sent out some with bad bearings, so that may be your problem. See: http://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=17869.msg173023#msg173023

I had this happen in early winter from rain/ice storm. I used some Windex to free it up once things warmed up a bit. I don't think it will happen much, the conditions have to be no wind and light rain while turning colder for it to freeze.  At best/worst an occasional annoyance.

Some have made make-shift heaters for their sensors. You can find info using this forum and a Google search.

Mine wasn't even a month old when the bearing went. They sent me a new one, but it didn't fix the problem, so I got a Vantage Vue. Anyway, I am happy that yours was just frozen.
