Raindar mobile app - Radar app
« on: August 18, 2019, 05:35:58 PM »
My favorite radar app stopped working today (Android). Why am I posting this in the WU subforum? Because this app used the WU data as evident by the WU colored logo on the bottom of the map.

It just won't update now. I've never seen it do this in the many years that I've used it. I wonder if anything WU did broke it.

Why I like this old app:
- it was free with no ads
- it provided very high resolution rain radar not at all blocky like some other apps
- it was Live... Down to the minute radar delay. Others are like 10 minutes out delayed.
- it loaded fast

If anyone has some advice on their favorite radar app please share. Live delay is most important and then followed by high resolution. I'll pay for it if it's does those two things.

Weird.... Raindar is working again. I'm happy.

Well if anyone knows of any other app that satisfies my above requirements please share.

Depends what your looking for. L2 data has spoiled me. Very high resolution and not blocky like L3.
Really only 3 that I use.
Wx, Radarscope, and a new one
that is about 6 months old is Radar Omega.
Something else you may like is Rain viewer. By the way these are all for Android.

Great thank you. Which one of those mentioned has timely most live radar maps? I don't want 10 minute updates.

If you're not paying for L2 data, you're getting delayed radar.

When I went to Skywarn spotter training the people in class were recommending Radar Scope, Pro Tier 2 annual fee.

Yep, I've used RadarScope for years.  $9.99 a year I think...

All 3 offer L3 data with little or no delay.
Radarscope and Omega have L2 with little or no delay.
Wx has L2 but it uses public server's so it lags behind. But unlike the other 2 you can create your own color pallette for most radar products.

Radar Omega updates L2 just as fast as Radarscope with no sub. I don't know where they get it from but it's always current.

I understand Level 1 is raw radar data and nobody wants that. Level 2 is processed good resolution. And Level 3 is further processed and has more features maybe? Or something like that. How can I tell if an app is showing me L2 or L3? I'm not certain I really know or can tell the difference.

RainViewer app looks well polished. It has a paid version for 5 minute data on time charge of $4 seems reasonable. Is this a L2 or L3 app?

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]  [ You are not allowed to view attachments ] Notice the difference in the two images. The L2 has much smaller blocks so to speak. Hence higher resolution.
L2  is also much more data intensive so if you are going to use it with cellular data keep that in mind.
