Opinions Please... Mounting Idea!
« on: September 12, 2017, 01:51:49 PM »
I am changing to a Davis station from Ambient.  I currently have the Ambient up on a 10' conduit attached to a 4' fence post.

I'm going to the move new station to a more open area. My idea is using either a 6 or 7 ' steel u post sunk in to the ground (approx 18") and screwing in to the Conduit.. My thinking is this should hold up ok.. See pics.. Any thoughts?

I assume that green post is what they use to hold up fencing. They are not very strong and bend real easy when pushed in a certain direction. That is going to be the weak spot.

Unless you use guy wires, 18" in the ground is not enough.

Conduit may be too THIN, pipe is THICKER walled and thus more resistant to yielding to wind gusts.

Also, you have to consider sealing BOTH ends to keep water out, and pipe is threaded to accept caps, conduit isn't.

It's emt conduit and plenty rigid enough.. Weather station sits on one end and the other end sits on the ground.. No issues with open ends.

You are correct, it's fairly sturdy though. I do like the guy wire addition..!

I used to use the exact same green post (fence style) and I attached 1 1/4" galvanized posts to that. The green post mainly just served as an anchor to the ground as I was able to pound it deep into the ground. You definitely will want to use guy wires if you go with this setup however, and if you do, it should be rock solid. It worked very well for me! I now use a ground tripod that works great as well!

If you want the tipper to have any kind of accuracy in the wind, this is a must, along with being level. If you don't care and/or have an alternate device, it won't matter (other than the ISS potentially blowing down).

Sure, proper tools always help. If you're uncomfortable, goggle instillation tips.
