Sniff.. the SD card on my SheevaPlug Meteohub died...
« on: July 29, 2017, 05:07:55 PM »
My venerable meteohub (on SheevaPlug) stopped working.  I rebooted and nosed around with SSH after reboot and removed some files (the filesystem was up to 89% used on one partition).  Thought that would do it, but no.. went along for a few hours then stopped responding again (no SSH, no HTTP, no SMB).

I removed the 4GB Transcend SDHD card and tried to do an image backup (with Win32DiskImager) .. it stopped(crashed) due to a I/O error after about 90% of the copy was done.

Any hope of salvaging the data and/or resurrecting the appliance?

Meanwhile, I've powered it down until a fix is found..

Sorry for your loss.  Transcend cards are CRAP!  I have lost three or four already.  I know it is early to move on, but try Lexar.  Def. not Kensington.

I am curious about how many "rounds" the SD card had, if you know. I bought a Panasonic "Industrial" SD card, but my current card (I think a SanDisk) is still going at 87.94 rounds. Apparently the purchase of the Panasonic card is like having the umbrella keeping the rain away or something. It is still sitting in the package waiting for the existing one to die.
These things wear out, but the multi-level flash seems to be the worst.
I am running a Raspberry Pi for my Meteohub(s).

I'll try to get it active for a short time later today.. I'm interested in the "rounds" also.. I'll see if I can pull it up.

I tried using the 4.9 .img file to flash a 8GB SanDisk SDHC 1 (40MB/s) disk.. the SheevaPlug would start booting.. think a bit, then reboot (cycle repeats endlessly).  The Transcend SDHC was a 4GB (150x) card that's been in continuous service since Oct, 2011 -- not a bad run.

Got it to start up for a bit:

Linux Kernel:   2.6.32   1192 BogoMIPS, 515 MB RAM, SheevaPlug
MeteoHub:   4.9w (Build 1429)   ©2013 by smartbedded UG (haftungsbeschränkt)

Media:   SDC 05/2011 0x000000b3 (12628.42 rounds)
Swap:   0MB of 131MB used (0%)
System:   654MB of 838MB used (78%)
Data:   1123MB of 2542MB used (44%)

I'd say it's well aged

Mine says: SS16G 08/2015 0xe574a0bb (87.94 rounds). Maybe this is known only unto Boris
I suspect that the hex number is separate from the "rounds" number and they just are on the same line. Maybe some hex address or serial number for the flash card? Dunno.

Not sure what "rounds" are (?), but fitting a bigger card than you need can extend the lifetime. More cells for the wear levelling to work with and more spare cells for mapping out failing ones.

I think that they are a measurable for the number of wear-leveling cycles.

By the way, I have a lot of graphing plots calculated in my meteohub from multiple sensors. My 2nd meteohub has far fewer "rounds" and only has a few plots and a single ISS to contend with. I think that the data is being overwritten much more frequently than your typical camera application.
