New England Blizzard February 2017
« on: February 12, 2017, 03:56:42 PM »
The storm has begun here in Leeds, ME. View my webcam and current weather conditions at my site
http://monumenthillweather.webs.com/

Don't forget to check my Snowfall Page to see how much snow we've received so far. Note we've already got a current snow depth of almost 3 feet, and after this storm that may be closer to 5ft! I will try to update snowfall as often as possible. Direct link to my snowfall page here http://monumenthillweather.webs.com/snowfall-page

We are expecting around 1.5 to 2 feet of new snow, with snowfall rates of 2 to 5" per hour at times overnight tonight and into tomorrow morning. At the same time we will be seeing Northeast winds sustained around 25-35MPH with gusts 50+MPH. Should be a great storm!

Thanks Ocala! I'm excited to see what the storm really has to offer. Snowfall intensity is now picking up and the wind is now starting to increase. Strongest winds should be tomorrow as the storm rapidly intensifies in the Gulf of Maine late tonight and through tomorrow.

Almost 7 states full of winter storm warnings - I'd say that's a doozie right there. Everybody stay safe up there!

If there's one good thing, it's warmed up to a balmy 16F as this storm has moved in!  Been snowing for the past two days with temps just above zero.

Might mean that a wetter snow is on its way with RH values being a little higher.

We've only received about 2" of snow this year where I live in West Virginia. That's down from about 21" this time last year (which is close to average). We received about 28" for the season, but about 17" came from a single storm.

That's what I'm thinking. They're saying power outages are likely, esp. closer to the coast where it will for sure be a wetter snow.

Our season total is just under 80" before this storm, should be closing in on 100" with this one. An average winter for us brings around 100" but we still have plenty of winter left ahead. Another 6-12" possible this Wednesday I'm now hearing...

Thought the NE area was having a mild winter. 100" is serious snow if not a ski resort.

Most of the NE has had a mild winter, but Maine is always the exception. It's a completely different world here as compared to the other NE states. We had a record cold December and then a relatively mild January. So far February has been cold and snowy. And 100" is very typical in this part of the state (West-Central Maine), with the exception of last winter when we only saw just under 60". The ski resorts here typically see 130" to 200" per year, give or take some depending on the year.

I have snowfall totals from the last 6 winters on my snowfall page. We were behind for this year until this month, and now we're ahead of schedule.

Oh, and as I write this it's coming down HARD and we already have just under 7"!!

As of 5:30AM we are up to 12" with lots of 3+ ft drifts all around. The wind continues to pick up and will peak later today as the snowfall starts to fade away. We are in a lighter snow band currently, but the radar continues to fill in with heavier bands as the storm intensifies in the Gulf of Maine. More updates later...

Over 2 feet now (25 inches) with 4-5ft drifts all around. It is snowing harder now than it has during the whole storm! We had a peak gust of 49 MPH earlier on my Davis VP2. What a storm! Our current snow depth is up over 50". Our season total is now over 100" and climbing!

And latest reports are calling for around a foot possible on Wednesday in our next storm...

And just like that, another Blizzard here in Maine! White out conditions currently with snowfall rates of 2-4" per hour and 40-50 MPH winds! We expect to see 16-22" before all is said and done with this storm by tomorrow morning. I can't see more than 50 ft right now to the treeline behind my house!
