Davis rain lower than manual
« on: April 26, 2017, 01:14:08 AM »
Hi folks

I have 2 Davis buckets, one is modded to the OS station and a ClimeMet Manual (100mm funnel)
The OS (Davis modded bucket) also has a larger funnel (250mm) and tips at about 0.1mm
Early hours we had a wee downpour and i checked how much we had and this is what was recorded

Davis3.0mm
OS (davis)2.7mm
Manual5.0mm

There is no getting around the manual, imo, that has to be right?
I have only had the Davis since Feb, surely it shouldnt need calibrating?

Any thoughts please?

What does this (modded) rain gauge look like? When did Davis make a 250mm funnel and a 0.1mm tipper?

Davis didn't /doesn't. I made it and it's for the OS station, you just add a bigger funnel and then add the new tip measurement in WD

Oki, stoopid rookie mistake, I failed to take in to account the amount that fell before midnight which was 1.4mm

Interesting, how have you calibrated the wider gauge?

The most frustrating aspect of my Davie VP2 has been the rain bucket/tipper for  me.
What I have done and it has helped greatly.I spray wd40 on the tipper & parts every 2-3 months.
Add RainEx to bucket/ cone...amount of water coupling on the plastic is not preferred.
I live in NW NJ in the higher terrain ...I noticed that I getting lots of "gunk" on the system that was hindering the system.

WD40 might do the same thing.

Nah..I was under reporting with local rain by 40 - 50% on avg for a long time
Apparently there are 7 local weather geeks in 1/2- 5 sq miles.
Don't spray hard with wd40  for what it worth.
Imop my tipper became corroded with gunk after harsh seasons or insect bs/pollenn.
