no sorry m8 no idea never needed it IOS/Mac User . just turn off website tracking ,BLOCK pop up windows ,flash doesnt load/display in Safari . hence no idea what it is or never needed something like that .

Thanks for the funniest post that I've read all week!!!  I personally feel that Safari on the Mac is even worse than Internet Exploiter on Windows, and only use it to test that a web site I'm visiting is actually broken and not just malfunctioning due to my ad and javascript blockers in Chrome.

I try not to use the web on iOS, since Chrome doesn't support plugins and the ads drive me crazy.  There are ad blockers for iOS, but they either work by passing all traffic through a proxy (not desirable) or setting up a bogus VPN profile (which would probably clobber my real 24/7 privacy VPN functionality).

The javascript blocker is actually more important than ad-blocking to me.  I don't use or view Facebook/Twitter content, so why are  75% of the web sites that I visit loading javascript from one or both?!?!?  Talk about spyware!  I often wonder if the NSA isn't sponsoring them both to track where everyone is going or reading?  Well worth the effort of "training" the script blocker, IMHO.....

hello

glad it made you smile rather than make you cringe at my ignorance or lack of knowledge (with no dark sarcasm in the classroom) , but seriously I have no use or need to add a blocker of any kind , I have multiple mac based machines, tablets, phone and so on and never seen the need to be concerned about blocking anything. Now as for windows , I bought a windows laptop brand spanking new Dell super duper intel processor(that was supposed to take me to the darkside of the moon) 8gb of ram (that should gave me that wish you were here feeling) etc last year as I thought I would try and go back to a windows based OS , i kept it 3 days and returned it(it felt like the wall) , i literally spent 3 days of  closing annoyying pop up windows and annoying  other nag screens (finally my hands felt just like two balloons) . This experience I have not had in 10 years using a MAC based OS and thats the truth (I have become comfortably numb.) I'm not irritated by ads what get sup my nose is those the take over your desktop or device your using.

So as for Safari i don't have your issues whilst surfing the net be on any device or machine I use. So there you are I have NO need or requirement personally.(perhaps on you can guess what I have been listening to all day)..take care brian

It is a bit contradicting that on one hand you post very useful info about how to shrink page size, but the fact that 80% of today's normal webpages (not personal) are ad bloatware does not really concern you. What use does it have if a page has minified JS and zipped images and SVG sprites, which save a few kbs, and then a huge ad in the background 1MB large...

i don't build websites with bloatware or ads so I don't see that as a contradiction , if I did then sure it is a contradiction but I don't .. so you want to get under my skin like a rash so be it :-)

No, sorry, I think you misunderstood me...

What I meant was that you obviously care about page size - that is for your own page.

But if I remember correctly, you also mentioned connection in Turkey and its speed is not that great - in which case you would benefit from AdBlockers a lot because they would substantially shrink the size of webpages, just think about how many ad images etc. you see on pages today (news sites etc.) It is not just popup banners or Flash.

no i did not misunderstand you , what we experienced in turkey is throttling at times when things happen so be it using apps or browser the internet is a waste of time so we switch off and watch the events unfold on tv . but I see what your saying but when its not throttled our fibre optic  100mb connection works wonders . anyway I'm not disagreeing and I definitely see the need when using a windows based os as I experienced recently the whole whole desktop at one point was just inundated with ads all over the place , hence I took it back otherwise i would have "thrown it out the window" ...enjoy the rest of the weekend

Sure Brian :-) Just one last thing - I think you still don't quite understand what the AdBlock does. It is a browser extension and so has absolutely no effect on whatever OS you use. It works exactly the same way on Win and Macs or Linux. It blocks ads on sites. It specifically targets pieces of HTML and JS and hides them or not loads them at all.

Have a nice weekend too :)

I hate ALL ads that show up where I don't want them.  That's one of the main reasons I stopped watching TV, listening to the radio and buying newspapers and magazines.  At least I can use the snail junk mail to light fires in the wood stove.

If I want to buy something or find information on products, I'll search for those things in places I expect to find things for sale.

Just to give you an idea - even on my laptop with over 10yr old technology, searching for updates on Linux takes 2s, then installation usually a few minutes max, completely done in the background, with no need to restart etc. And my guess is it probably works similarly on Macs.

Apple distributes OS-X (now MacOS) updates for apps dowloaded from their store (as well as OS updates/upgrades) through the App Store.  Most app updates will install without a reboot, although they may require the specific app to be closed during the upgrade process.  They bundle OS patches into batch updates, which *do* require a reboot to install and are quite large to download.  A few of their built-in apps like iTunes and some raw camera file thingy come with independent updates, and I find those exceptions to be the most annoying.

I'm not going to comment on OS-X's ancient Commodore Amiga and early Mac-based multitasking model that was butchered on top of a Unix kernel, but will comment that my office at work is near a support center that sees their fare share of malware-infected Macs owned by people who drank the Apple Kool-Aid about not needing virus/malware protection.

In the name of disclosure, I must state that both my own home computer and my office desktop computer are Macs, and I work equally with Windows and Linux servers for a living.  The only Windows computer in my house is my wife's notebook, because she refuses to use a Mac... and she complains all the time that it is acting strange.  Everything else that I have a home runs on CentOS or Raspbian Linux.  As I have said on multiple occasions, Windows 8 was the greatest sales tool...for Macintosh computers.....

And what about the Windows Mistake Edition? :D

I would argue that *every* version of Windows since 1995-SP1 was a mistake, since that was the first version where Microslop bungled IE (and the TCP/IP network stack needed to use the Internet) into the OS distribution.  It went pear-shaped from there, with the only respite being Win7/2008-R2.  Remember, the Internet's design and security was based around multi-user systems and responsible sysadmins at the time, and things like SMTP (email) can show you how those decisions *still* have consequences in your spam folder even 20+ years later.

Personally, as a former Gopher user and site owner, I think that NCSA Mosaic destroyed the Internet.  Oh, and WU was a much nicer place when you accessed it by telnet to downwind.sprl.umich.edu port 3000.....

The only relatively usable Win for me was XP.

Now I have 7 at work and it is occasionally driving me nuts... Win 8 and 10 - I know it and was forced to use it when installing it to my mom and colleagues, who also sometimes ask me when something is unclear (i.e. every day). Whoever was responsible for Win8 is hopefully long time fired from MS. Win 10 sort of likewise.

The first Win I ever used was 98 and it is a paradox that I now have it again on my Laptop... since it is the only Win it can run, but I have it as dual boot, my primary system at home is Lubuntu Linux and that is what I use 99% of time.

If my laptop could handle it I guess I probably would switch to Win7 as my primary OS. Not that I like it, but the compatiblity of stuff is just a problem with Linux

My 2 €urocents

I got in my hand a Win7 laptop after i had used Win10 for a half year, and my tought was like "what old junk is this?"
No, i don't like M$ "as is" and even less their things on Win10 and i have killed every damn spying-thing possible. But, Win have a few things what i don't get to work/like on Linux. Like that theese forums fonts gets damn minimal/oddy sized on Linux.

btw. One thing what allways are forgotten when in talks about OS'es, its what desktop in Linux is meant. It have many desktops what both looks and works more or less different. So talking about only "Linux Mint" for example are misleading.

LOL,
my Linux distro is probably the most stripped down Linux out there :D Even Lubuntu was lagging so I uninstalled many things, it looks like Win98, grey panels etc. And I even deleted the desktop extension, so there is no desktop :D It boots directly to file manager :D But it is quite fast now - until I open some browser and editor :D But the OS is quite fast. And only takes up 150MBs
