Anyone on GoDaddy Upgraded to 4GH
« on: March 16, 2011, 10:24:53 AM »
Any of you upgraded your GoDaddy account to the new 4th Generation Hosting?

It sounds good. Has some new checks and is better at busy times. I've been on Economy-Linux for the past 6 years,
and in order to do it I've had to back up my databases as they arent compatible during the upgrade
and will need to restore them after the fact (or so I was told)

Just wondering if anyone else has done this before I pull the trigger and if there were any issues.

Thanks!
Tony  :-)

I have not, but I do notice that the Linux-Economy hosting is slow sometimes when executing PHP scripts.  Do you think this uprgrade would help that?

Here's what they say.

Quote
Each multi-server hosting cluster starts at 4x the number of servers of traditional 2GH Web hosting and
will automatically scale up as needed to absorb traffic spikes. We monitor our systems 24/7/365.

4GH uses advanced features like Dynamic Traffic Management, Dynamic Defense Management
and Dynamic Server Management, making your site fast, reliable and secure.

And yes, like you said, sometimes the sites are a little slow.

If you're on Economy Linux already, no extra charge.

It's through a different data center so I think thats why the database stuff I need to do.

Painfully slow process. I had to back up my who's online database and delete it
in order to upgrade. Been an ongoing process since Sunday afternoon. Says between
1 and 72 hours to complete. Then I can re-install my db.

I should hope that mine goes faster when I commit to it.  I don't have any DBs.   \:D/

This continues to be a PITA. Waiting on them to figure out why I can't create databases.

Keep giving me coupons at least.

So Tony, how did your transfer to 4G Hosting work out?
Is your site faster or slower now?

What a pain.

I think the site is faster now though.

There were a few issues and it took almost 2 weeks. I thought it had been migrated
to a new server, but I guess there were some old incompatible programs (advanced guestbook)
that I had to give them permission to remove.

Had to remove the who's online database and then reinstall it on the new server
with the backed up data.

They got me onto the new servers but it screwed up my .htaccess file so my site was dead for 12 hours.
They can't modify that file but can only tell you what to do to fix it.

Other than that it's fine now. I've got a lot of 10-20% off coupons if anyone wants them

Thanks for the update!
I'm thinking about migrating mine over as well.
They will probably move everyone over eventually, so I might as well get a head start on it.
Just praying for no major problems!

What did they do to your .htaccess file to mess it up?

How will upgrading to 4GH affect the FTP process?  I read that your site would be hosted on several servers and not just one.  Am I correct?  I have the Enconomy Shared (linux) plan.

Thanks.

Haven't seen any issues with it so far Chris. Site does seem to load a bit
faster which was my goal on busy days.

Nice looking site you have there too. What software you using? I like
the climate pages with the icons on it.

Are you still FTPing to one server like in the economy hosting.  This mulitple server lingo is confusing me a bit.  FTP process is the same?

Thanks for the kind words.  I'm using WeatherLink 5.8 with Dreamweaver CS5 ...That's why I'm kinda concerned about the upgrade.  I like your site too.  Got some ideas from it too, like havng the temp on every page although I'm probably doing it slightly different than you.

Yep, still FTP'ing like before.

I guess the 4GH senses when your site gets a lot of traffic and shares your site's bandwith over multiple GoDaddy servers from what I read.
Still one FTP address to send to just like before. Like I said, no issues with that at all. You'll lose your site for a few hours
more than likely as the IP address will change when going from Economy Shared Linux to 4GH. If your domain is at GoDaddy, no
problems with getting the IP changed for your domain.

Thanks!! I'm using Ken's ajax templates along with Scott's ajax dashboard. I've cut and pasted,
mished and moshed, yelled and screamed, and pieced it together to my liking (for today) lol

Ken has come up with some templates for Weather Link too.

Have Fun!

Whelp I went and did it and its already up!  Only took about 2 hours.  But, now I'm having issues with my .htaccess file.  To get the temperature on every page, I use a piece of code in the .htaccess file that "converts" pages with .html extensions and runs them as PHP.  On those pages I'm getting a 403 FORBIDDEN error.  When I comment out that piece of code, the pages display again, but my code to get the temperature can be seen at the top of page where I put it.

Piece of code giving me issues:
AddHandler x-httpd-php5 .html

You mentioned that you renamed the .htacess?  Literally give it another name?  I know, dumb question.

I had to rename my htaccess file for some reason.

Right now it's .htaccess2  thats what tech support at GoDaddy had me do.
I'm still trying to get my sticker redirect working because of it.

wow!  you are awesome!  that worked!

changed it to:
AddHandler x-httpd-php5-cgi .php

Thank you so much!

P.S.  I'm definitely noticing a speed difference too although my site isn't all that big.

I've been with GoDaddy for about two years and recently upgraded to 4GH.  I FTP data on my homepage using WeatherLink every 5 minutes.  All of a sudden, this past weekend I kept repeatedly getting "Error Connecting to FTP Server".  There were times where the FTP connection was successful, but 90% of the time I got that error.  So I contacted support and got this reponse:

"What is happening is that our server is seeing your program's consecutive logins as hammering and is temporarily blocking your IP address from being able to connect to the server as a security measure.  As such, this cannot change, as our security is in place for a reason.

The only real solution to this is an upgrade to a Virtual Dedicated Server.  It increases the cost, but the speed and you own ability to manage the server as the admin will allow you to do essentially what you want with your hosting."

I've been using WeatherLink to update my website for about 10 years now and never had this issue of being locked out because of FTPin a file on a scheduled interval.

Would anyone be able to offer suggestions as to what I should do?
